I have a rare Macwester Sloop (30.5 ft). According to the records only 12 (T12)were build as sloops, most were ketch. However, the original (transportation??) plague which i found inside the boat, identifies the boat as "Ardeola" T14. Hence, not sure whether the hull is Mk I or II.

Great family yacht; go anywhere; not for sale.(see picture on top left corner)

TamarMike... Thank you very much for your vairous Macwester photos.

I'll sort through them and upload them ASAP. These will help substantially, because so far there is only a Rowan 22, and Mac 27 section.

Cheers : )

According to the MOA Boat Types table the Sloops and yawls/ketches (Wights) were numbered in the same series totalling 85, with the only clarification being that T1 to T8 were sloops. If you can acccess the Macwester Members Forum someone there has the books of original sail number issues from 1964 to 1979.

PS Sorry to hear Captain Fantastic has got the plague, though I suppose it makes a change from osmosis :)

Captain Fantastic; it's hard to see any detail in your photo as it's too small.

I'm no expert, but if your length is accurate, then looking at the Macwester owners website model list, it seems to me that your boat is most probably a "Macwester 30 Sloop". As TamarMike states there was no official Mk I, but it seems most likely that your example would be classed as a Mk I.

I can't explain the build/hull number. If you have larger pictures - that could make it easier to nail down.

Captain Fantastic: Thank you for for sending through your photos. To be frank, at this stage I'm still unsure about the MK I v Mk II situation. The window frames look more Mk II to me, while other features look more Mk I. If you were to push me, given the build info published on the Macwesters owners website and some of the features ...I'd opt for Mk I.

There will be Macwester gurus out there that will have the answer. Not sure what else to suggest, but I'll have a think about it and if I come up with anything I'll PM you.

Hi,

I could still do with more Macwester photos if they're out there please. Any Macwester models are of interest, but especially photos of the following:

  • Kelpie
  • Rowan Rose / Rowan 8m
  • Creeler
  • Macwester 28
  • Malin
  • Pelagian
  • Hebridean
Thanks!

If you can't find an original Macwester 28 it might be worth bearing in mind that the Atlanta version is probably just as much a Macwester as the Trident built later 27s and Malins except that with the latter the brand name was sold on along with the moulds.

TamarMike:

Yes... I still have your 'Atlanta 28' photos, and I plan to include them within the Macwester 28 section. However I don't want to do that without having a 'Macwester 28' in there first ...I guess so that I can acknowledge that they're basically the same boat, and allow visitors to make a comparison between the two.

Thanks for your continued help : )

Hi yodave
I had a Macwester 30 sloop from 2000 to 2007 and when I sold her I delivered her from the river Deben in Suffolk to Gallions Point Marina just short of the Thames barrier. I do have some photos and will dig them out and send them to you. I think she was T7, but not sure.

There is another Macwester 30 in a boatyard at Russell Hunt Marina at Gunthorpe on the river Trent near where I live (about 10 miles downstream from Nottingham). She was different inside as the dinette was to the left as you go in (Port) whereas mine was the other side. She had an original Merceedes 42hp engine, mine a Yanmar 2GM20 (1994). She had the port side damaged in a yard fire in the late 1990's but has been repaired but not to a good standard. She has changed hands since but I doubt if she will get back in the water as the new owner is as dynamic as the previous one.

I did know where there was another "30" but cannot remember where at the moment. I will try and get the photos to you over the next few days.
Paul

Here's a picture of Rowana just before I bought her. I'll try and dig out some more when I get the time.

She's a Rowan 8 meter, BTW

MrCramp: Thanks very much, I'd really appreciate any photos you could send over - especially given that Macwester 30 sloops are so rare.

Rowana: Thanks very much as well - I don't have a Rowan 8m in the photobank, so yours can be the first to populate that section.

I'll upload any photos you send over in the relevant sections on the page below [but it will be next week now, as I'm heading to my wee boat soon]:

Enjoy your weekend!

Rowana: Many thanks for e-mailing your images. I've uploaded some of them to the Rowan Rose / Rowan 8m section. She looks like a lovely example!

Best wishes...

Me again,

One last request before I head-off for a mini-cruise up the coast. I could really do with more a few Macwester photos if they're out there please. Any Macwester models are of interest, but especially photos of the following:

  • Kelpie
  • Rowan Rose [not sure how different these are from the 8m]
  • Creeler
  • Macwester 28
  • Malin
  • Pelagian
  • Hebridean

Thanks!

Hi yodave,

I've just bought a Macwester 26 that's in need of a general tidy-up, I'll send you some pictures of her current state and hopefully follow them up with some "improved" photos.
Chris

This is a Macwester 27, but might be a 26. Anyone know for sure?
Chartered from Strome, Scotland in 1983. She's called Saorsa Jane.

Yes she looks like a Macwester 27. Lower shrouds moved onto the coachroof and a different front hatch together with a slightly more modern look indicate a 27.

The features you note indicate a very late one at that, would have been only a few years old in 1983.
