M25 Tonight

Leaving Oxford at about 5 heading for Dover. How long will it take?

As with all motorway journeys these days incidents can make a 1hr journey extend into 6!!

I would check in with AA roadwatch just before leaving for latest holdups & for Friday night go the south side of the M25 to avoid the Dartford crossing which is usually a 0.5hr delay (It was a 12ml queue going N on Wednesday at 19.30!). Travelling later does not necessarily help as all major roadworks/resurfacing start at approx 22.00 and you can often find the moptorway closed with slow diversions.

Leaving at 17.00 I would hope for 3.5 hrs and be happy at 4.5hrs!

It's not looking good at the moment

M25 closed both ways.

Sounds about right for a Bank Holiday weekend. And its no good thinking of going a northern route around the M25 as the roadworks between the M40 and M1 will be caos.

One solution might be, A34 to Winchester, A272 through to Crowbrough then A26 back up to Sevenoaks, it wont be fast but it will be moving.

I am not sure if this is right. You are highly likely to get stuck in traffic which does not move anyhow: passing through any time on a Friday evening is going to be more of a hassle than sweating it out on the M25. FWIW don't even think of passing by/through Reading. Keep monitoring the situation with your Traffic TV. Go through M25 S as shown and you'll make it eventually

A34 from Oxford is a nightmare at the best of times, I think which ever way I go it might be a bit slow. Still I have a flexible ticket on the ferry so no problem from that side of things.
As long as I make last orders in the YC :)

This makes me so glad I live in Scotland.

Yes we do have traffic jams and hold ups, we think 10/15 minutes held up is a lifetime.

Not so, getting out of Oxford will be the worst bit, you have to do that anyway, you will get a lot of the Midland traffic heading south on the A34 I grant you, but the A272 will mainly be local traffic, it is only slow because of this and the speed limits, natural and legal. By the time you get to the A26 you are heading north, and most of the traffic will be heading south. It will only be once you join the M25/M26 that any real congestion will affect you. According to benyone, the M25 is closed just before the M26 so the whole area around the M25 will be a nightmare, its best to join it as late and for as little as possible.

Also using the A34 you completely miss Reading and the usual traffic blackspots around Surrey/M25 corridor. I'm off to Stanstead tomorrow, so will be watching this closely. From where I am I'll join the A272 to the A26 etc.
