M25 Tonight

Where the A34 crosses the M3 will have tail backs of 3 or so miles going South. Fridays are always bad and Bank Holidays even worse. Suggest A339 Basingstoke and then continue onto A31

This makes me so glad I live in Scotland.

Yes we do have traffic jams and hold ups, we think 10/15 minutes held up is a lifetime.

You obviously haven't driven through Glasgow on the M73/M8 in the late afternoon recently! It's so bad that the SatNav (with Traffic Messaging) routinely avoids it, and having ignored it once, I know why!

Perhaps but for a good few years I drove home along the M4 , there was no practical alternative.

Bank holidays English style are lunacy, if I want a day of I do not want it marred and controlled by ridiculous traffic jams.

Oh! yes I have but still has nothing to compare with M5/M6 and SE jams. As said we in Scotland tear our hair out with a 10/15 delay. Did loss the plot about 5/6 weeks ago on way back from boat on Sunday evening 4 miles of cones and dead stop from south of Kingston Bridge to find they were working on one small expansion joint near the townhead. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
The joys of being retired can try and avoid the worse times problem is my gf works. Like all well planned things though I sometimes get it wrong.
The worse one at the moment is the M80/A80 upgade 12 miles of 40mph with lane swapping all over the place but not to worry it will be over in 2011 they say?????

As soon as thats over they will start on something else, I expect as soon as they have finished the works along here on the Road Bridge we will have all the works starting for the new bridge just liee you had at Kincardine.

Quite. I've never understood these English "bank" holidays. I tried to phone two English based organisations this morning (neither of them banks), but the entire country is apparently on holiday again. Why?

If, in a crowded part of the world, everyone's off at the same time then it's inevitable that they end up piled on top of each other. Seems daft to me, but maybe someone familiar with the system can explain a benefit which I've failed to grasp?

Funnily enough I've had the same problem on the 2nd January and the 3rd August when I tried to contact Scottish companies!

I can understand your comment re. 2nd Jan, that's treated in Scotland much the same as 26 Dec is in England, and applies very widely (though not universally: there's pressure, generally resisted, from some non-Scottish based companies to work "normally" on 2 Jan). Outside the Xmas and New Year period, however, all other public holidays are local. The country was certainly not shut on 3 August!

It is increasingly common practice for public holidays to be treated as "floating" and simply added to annual leave entitlements. This makes a lot of sense and tends to suite both businesses and individuals.

Here is the answer, Left at 5 to 5 hit the M40, no problems to the M25, bit slow round the M40 to M3 section but it keep moving, A van had overturned at between J7 and J6 took about an hour to clear this section but again it keep moving slowly.
Got to Macdonalds at Folkstone at 8.30 for a coffee then another 15 minutes to Dover.
Travel time 3 hours 50 mins. Compared with 2 hours 45 on a good day so not bad.
Coming back last night about 2 and a half hours total, no traffic at midnight.

I'll tell you all about F**king Norfolk line later.

Hi bendy... I was not too far off with 4 hors, then.

Of course once they get that High-Speed link between Reading and Paris, with a stop in Calais, you'll be catching the train (1 hour, I suppose ...hahaha).

What was the matter with NL? I have always had brilliant service by them: are they going down the drain?

I can explain the 3rd of August, I was on my way back from holiday.

I agree with the 'floating' holidays, more and more employers are doing this in Scotland, mainly because many people now work in one local holiday area and live in another. Where I work now the only fixed days are Xmas and New Year when we acttually shut down for 10 days unless there is a panic order on.
