Ive just been reading the M25 post, which has got me thinking again. Why does nobody actually drum it into drivers to move into the nearest lane to the inside after overtaking- rather than just sitting in the middle or outside?

This applies to all motorways. I use the M25 frequently, and am always amazed by the undue congestion that cars create by sitting in the middle. The inside lane is often left mainly unused whilst the other 2/3 lanes are jamming up. I'm sure when I took my test, you were taught to move over after overtaking. There was definately no part of my test relating to 'Being asleep in the middle lane'!!!!

Surely if this was enforced or advertised a little more, it would free up some lane space? Am I missing something here?

I don't see why we can't overtake either side, it works OK in America, that would get the traffic flowing, just takes a bit of getting used to.

I agree, Ive tried it a few times as an experiment. You would be amazed at how many of the previously mentioned 'sleepers' are then suddenly wide awake with massive road rage attacks!!!!

Normally I drive everywhere on Britain's motorways at precisely 99.99mph generally inhabiting lane's 2 and 3. Just before Xmas I had the dubious pleasure of transporting SWMBO's mother from airport to home under strict instructions not to exceed the speed limit and this gave me an insight as to why so many people dont move to the inside lanes and it's because it's bloody scary there
You have one of Mr Dentressangle's finest 38 tonners so close to your back bumper that you can see in your rear view mirror what's left of the driver's Olympic breakfast stuck between his teeth. You have one of Mr Stobart's leviathan's to your right taking 10 minutes to overtake you and covering your screen in clouds of spray and smoke. You can hardly steer straight because your wheels are stuck in the truck tyre ruts, you're gasping for air due to the diesel fumes and, if you're a bit unlucky, you'll get side swiped. Is it any wonder that Mr Trilby feels safer tootling along in the outer lanes? OK he'll get a few flashed headlights and one or two flicked V's but what's that to being mangled by an artic?

Good for you, why should we be held back by ignorant drivers, there are too many arseholes that shouldn't be on the road anyway. In Greater London we have all these stupid painted green lanes taking up a chunk of the roads for the cyclists, always empty, I would tax them for using the roads, why on earth should they be allowed to use them free? As for horses, they should be in fields, the ones on the roads are being ridden by the steriotype fat arsed arrogant women who block the roads deliberately and let their horses mess on the roads where children go to school.......Rant over.....

Very good. It wd obviously be best to continue to drive at 99.99 mph (pretty accurate driving i must say) and get a small calculator, type in "70.00" and stick it to the dashboard and explain that is a speed limiter.

I've given up doing it as an experiment and admit to doing it virtually everytime I'm on a Motorway or rural dual carriageway. Trip from Brum to Southampton M42, M40, A34, M3 and back each weekend would be a nightmare otherwise. I know its totally wrong, but so is sitting in a queue of traffic in the outside lane doing 56 mph all up each others ar**s with nothing in the inside lane is equally wrong and far more dangerous. 56 mph of course because thats what all the lorries are governed down to and the old dear a mile ahead, at the front only wants to crawl past Monseuir Le Trucky, to ensure she gets sideswiped when he comes across Herr Lorry and wants to overtake him!

Ditto ... it amazes me how many drivers that you've sat patiently behind for many miles take umbrage when you have the audacity to attempt to overtake them ..

.. when's that again, but ..

The reason many times for the queue in the outside lane that you hate is because of people doing just what you propose, going up the inside and then pushing into the outside lane farther up the queue. This is also a significant cause of the outside lane coming to a sudden stop and creates a serious risk of rear end accidents. We would all like the roads to ourselves but we have to live with things the way they are, no one driver has any special rights to break the rules so that they can arrive earlier than everyone else whilst risking lives in the process.

Lane control/ Crystal Ball

Hi
I was on the 25 at the weekend and I am positive that I saw a sign advising drivers to stay in lane and keep to the speed limit, whether this applied to the route of the road works I am not sure, however it I did try a lane change and that was My last as it was far to dangerous to try and drive the 25 like a normal motorway, so I stayed in lane and was overtaken both on the outside and inside lanes whilst ovetaking drivers were negotiating a lane change to exit motorway !!
Oh deep joy how I enjoyed the journey!! I am going to take a crystal ball with me next time so I will have an idea where the Idiots intend going!!!!!

Agree with Robin about drivers going up inside and then cutting in, trouble is also a lot of drivers who do this end up holding you up when traffic clears.
When I lived in Germany, it was a fine and endorsable offence, for drivers who sat in outside lanes for miles( ok kilometers).
According to my father ( ex police) the police can do people in this country as well. Called driving with undue care and attention. There have been cases in past.
Mind you that would mean this shower in charge spending money on traffic cops instead of speed cameras( sorry not speed cameras now but SAFETY cameras?).
Believe also in America overtaking on inside is not actually permitted by law although is accepted practice. When Driving in States recently, have lots of signs telling driver to drive on right. Perhaps need signs in this country with similar message

Know what you are saying Robin but on many roads (I know the M3 particularly well) the inside two lanes are completely empty. And the cause of must accidents is driver frustration caused by the inconsiderate few. How may times on a long journey have you managed to "break past" the awkward sod causing the hold up and then had miles of trouble free driving on cruisecontrol. On a journey to Scotland it can make several hours of difference. Real answer is to psychologically test drivers and remove from motorways the ignorant ,awkward and bolshie!

.. when's that again, but ..

no I am sorry the real answer is to massively subsidise boats that have sleeping accomadation (the more accomadation the greater subsidy) to keep people off the roads.........

Certainly in most states in the USA overtaking is allowed either side, though some States I think overule this and/or have signs saying slower vehicles keep right. The downside is that in an emergency there is no automatic 'safe' option of swerving to the nearside whilst braking. You do get used to the overtaking either side in the USA, though in an emergency instantaneous reaction I'm not so sure. What is horrendous though is in some areas like the Chicago network of multi-lane roads where there is NO lane discipline and cars overtake on both sides whilst zig-zagging across all lanes, and don't even think of trying to keep to the speed limit! This makes the M25 very tame indeed.

The go up the inside and cut in routine in the UK is a major cause of the sudden stop in the outer lane. The immediate reaction to the cars in front suddenly stopping is to hit the brakes and swerve to the left, thus potentially meeting with another of the special case cowboys, result one accident maybe more...

I would like to see some action from the police re this and also tail gating, but neither can be done with cameras so thats it I guess.

I disagree - although there are some ignorant people who drastically push in the outside lane, the majority of hold-ups are not caused by these people. It is still the prats in the middle lane doing 60 and acting as a rolling roadblock that push the people doing 65 into the outside lane that cause the hold ups. I can drive down the M3, averaging a good speed of 80-90 in the inside lane and using the middle lane to overtake, whilst the outside lane is doing 70. I also find that there are also many drivers who automatically move to the outside lane if the traffic slows thinking they will make better progress which causes even more outside lane misery.

I belive that most lane hoggers do not even realise that they are doing anything wrong. A bit of media shaming would help!

rant over!

I'm not sure it is wise to publicly announce that you blatantly overtake on the inside (illegal) down the M3 and at 80 - 90mph too (illegal).

Sorry Marc, unless you are Percy Plod you are no more a special case than everyone else trying to get somewhere on time.
