Like those on the roads, sort of.

Notice is hereby given that from Saturday 15th June 2019, Lymington Harbour Commissioners will be trialling an experimental speed awareness sign which will be located on the Western Breakwater at the turn between Short Reach and Horn Reach adjacent to No. 11 Navigation Post.

This sign is designed to light up/flash (as pictured) if vessels breach the local speed limit inbound entering the vicinity of Short Reach.

Will anybody take any notice?

Cue streams of yotties trying to prove their boat can actually go that quick..
Anyone remember the Jasper Carrot jokes about the Reliant Robin?

I don't think Lymington Harbour Commissioners have any connection with the council whatever.

Well they're both good at collecting money, I'm still hurting after the parking ticket my ex' collected at the quay in my car 30 years ago, hard to think there isn't a connection or at least common intention

Reply to the notice and say it would be much better if the sign displayed your speed, rather than just saying you are going too fast.

Then you could use it to calibrate your log. (like I know from the roadside ones I am doing 30 when my speedo says 34)

Be careful! They are not always accurate either. I have GPS speed indication (which they say is also not 100%) and though it agrees with some, I have seen them showing 30 at around 27 -28 GPS speed

There is an issue with speed when there are sailing schools for the nippers and those boats without motors making their way in and out of the harbour. It's not just the speed in the inner harbour that is the problem its the outer harbour also has the problem. Many do not realise that the 6 knot limit is for the whole area under the jurisdiction of the habour authority and not only the marked channel. You see them comming across the marches at a fair old lick ( 15-20) and then turn into chnnel half way down. The whole idea of the 6 knot limit in the outer harbour is to reduce the damage to the salt marches - yup those very same ones they have just come across churning them up!
