While I’m passing time in Lymington in the Solent, waiting for the current lively weather to blow through, allow me to update you on the current state here.
This was my first visit since the new pontoons replaced the old town quay rafting arrangement. The new layout is a smart looking mix of finger berths and alongside berths up to two deep. There are many more visitors berths available compared to the previous arrangement. Upon arrival we received a warm and friendly greeting from the harbour master. As with many ports these days, booking ahead is recommended, together with advance payment, although most of the alongside berths are available on a first come first served basis.
The refurbishment of toilets and showers is overrunning. During this period, temporary toilets and showers are provided in quayside portacabins. Both are pleasant and the showers are particularly enjoyable, being modern and spacious. Let the water run for a while and you will soon be enjoying a lovely hot shower.
There is a new harbour master cabin at the base of the ramp to the quay. Next to that you will find waste bins and RNLI lockers in which you can leave life jackets should you choose to do so. I am thinking these are aimed at people who come ashore by dinghy.
It is all very impressive. Now lets talk prices. At first, I investigated berthing at Yarmouth as I had not visited for a long time. The rate, including electricity, for a 27’6” / 8.3M boat is £39. How did that happen? That is not the Yarmouth I remember. Lymington is not far behind but is anyway less at £32.40 including shore power. That’s still much higher than my expectation but at least significantly less than Yarmouth and there’s so much more to do in Lymington.
If you have the time, try walking or cycling the coast path to Keyhaven. The views of the Solent, the old salt works of Lymington and the wildlife are very special.
Overall, the new setup in Lymington is very good even if a little pricey. Thumbs up to the harbour team.
