As I dont have a car I am looking for a small, leak-proof battery, that I can take home for charging in the train, and that has enough "Umfh" to inflate the dinghy. Any ideas - the lighter and smaller the better.
Go to maplin, they have a number of small 12v batteries that will be suitable, and will be leakproof. Alternatively, go to local motorbike shop - but they wont be sealed.
the combination of these is a lot smaller and easier to carry than a foot pump, and a lot easier to use.
You could try a local alarm company. They replace the backup battery regularly when they service alarm systems, these are usually similar to the Screwfix one mentioned above, perhaps 3-4Ah. Should get one for nothing as they throw them away.
YOu need to bear in mind the current and LVM inflator will take. It's rated at 25A! A small 3-4Ah backup battery won't supply this kind of current. For the slightly technically minded, batteries have an internal resistance. This is why the voltage drops when you draw current. The internal resistance of a sealed lead acid backup is too high.
I've got the LVM inflator and I've used one of the Maplin batteries from memory 7Ah or something, not one of the smallest, but not one of the biggest either and it always pumps the inflatable up just fine... maybe pumping out 25A isn't good for the longevity of the battery but they aren't what you would call expensive and its put up with this kind of abuse for a couple of years.
Definitely wouldn't be too bad to carry on the train (maybe 1kg?), and it works for me.

You're better off with a motor cycle battery.

OK - question ..... My emerg. power pack is a 12v Sealed Lead Acid battery of 17 A/hr .... with standard terminals as in Alarm systems .... and its rated to start a car at 900 A peak ... 400 A start power .......... How ?? You have me confused .......
I saw a rechargable inflator recently but don't know much about it ( particularly whether it would cope with an inflatable ) web page

I have both a 12v croc clip job (£5) and a rechargeable same air-pump, different casing of course and run from a 6V SLA battery .....The SLA is now dead - due to lack of use ... but is a standard 6V SLA as in many systems ... oh and price of that was under a tenner ....
Both sold as Supermarket Air-bed inflators ... True they do not get Avon to final pressure - but just a few strokes of the foot-pump does that ...
Few days ago - I saw a Double action "stirrup style" hand pump with a 1.5ltr cylinder capacity. £4.50 ...... bought it for throwing in avon while away from power ... Tested it to see how fast it would pump up my Avon .... cor strewth !! Fast !! and with all the pressure you want ... Makes the standard Avon bellows look useless ......
