Can anyone advise if they have housed the Lowrance 3500 Chartplotter in an Instrument pod above the hatchway and if so can you provide details of the POD ie have you had it made or was it fitted into an existing arrangement on your boat

OI !!!!!! Hold on there mate !!!!

It is NOT in everyones way ...

But yes Antenna bit is shoved behind curtain !! My supplied bracket is single self-tapper through centre hole - so I can turn plotter around to view in cabin or out in cockpit as req'd .....

In answer to original post - Pod ?? What for ? The Instrument is designed for mounting at helm .... so that implies splash-proof at least ... I know mine hasn't had problems and I know others haven't ..... and those others are out in far worse than mine !!

thanks for the replies but the reason for wishing to mount the chartplotter in the instrument pod above the hatchway is because I have only a small yacht 27' and the idea was to mount it where it would not be obsqured by anyone siting in the cockpit. If anyone has done this in a GPR pod please advise

We have one to install in that location over the winter. I don't suppose we will be investing in the proper mounting kit at that price but I think that I can make up a pair of brackets that will sit behind the panel. Our bracket-mounted GPS has been similarly panel mounted by the nav station and that works OK.

The pod above the companion way is faced with a hardwood panel that houses the instruments. We have to make new holes to move the instruments to make room for the Lowrance so it is not a trivial job to do it properly - hence why we didn't attempt it mid-season.

We're intending to mount the antenna on top of the pod rather than route it to some remote location like the pushpit rail. Anyone got any thoughts on the performance with the antenna in that location?

When my boat finally makes it out to new Baltic Home ...

I have a couple of mods to do on her and one is to mount the 3500C ..... which will most likely be a stainless steel small arch over the main hatch .... so that it sits under the sprayhood, but not obstructing the hatch from sliding etc.

Second is the larger stainless steel arch to fit transom ... but that's another story.....

I've put mine on the sliding bit of the hatch so if I want to I can slide the hatch shut and thus bring the plotter closer to the eye. It's an arrangement which works for me.

The Lowrance is certainly supposed to be waterproof but I worry about the network connection NMEA. I did not have a plug cap supplied. Did you? I dont know what a dose of salt water would do to the socket.
Incidentally does anyone know where one can get a power etc. plug. I would rather not buy a lead from Lowrance at 40 dollars.

I've got a piece of hose, (correct diameter to be a reasonably tight fit), and filled one end with sealant. So far so good.

Lowrance 3500 network 2000 .... and cap

Why ?

If you have a 3500 then all connections have plugs and leads connected when working ............... maybe its the 3600 with internal antena you are talking about ???????

I have no need of any end cap for any socket on my 3500 - as said all are in use with supplied plugs / cables etc. .... the Network 2K is the external GPs antena input point .....
