Lowestoft to Harwich

When in relation to HW Dover is it best to leave Lowestoft for Harwich?

Boat is 30ft, 6ft draft, based on 5kn cruising speed.

Well it’s 40 odd miles I believe so an 8 hr trip at 5 kts - why don’t you leave at LW or LW -2 at Lowestoft and youl’ll have the bulk of your trip going with the tide.

You do want to carry some flood into Harwich - the further upriver you are going, the more you will want. As John says, if you leave at LW Lowestoft you will "carry" your flood tide, and you should have a couple of hours of flood remaining as you pass the Cliff Foot buoy.

HW Lowestoft is approx 2 hours before HW Dover.

In that neck of the woods the turn of the tide doesn't coincide with local low or high water so if you leave at LW Lowestoft there will an hour or so of adverse tide before it becomes in your favour.

You can look in most places, and the turn of the stream doesn't align with high and low water...

Indeed, but head a bit further into the Thames "estuary" and the two broadly align.

Great when you get an extra hour of flood when headed from the Orwell to the Crouch but getting back with an hour less ebb can be a challenge
