Low / no oil pressure volvo penta

Now when i start it the oil light and buzzer are on and when i loosen the filter it will go off, if i tighten the filter while the engine is running it will run all day. When she is shut down and left for a while (overnight) then restarted the oil light and buzzer come on again!!!!

It sounds as though your oil pump is losing its prime. Slackening the filter allows the air an quick easy escape route. Once the pump is primed it runs OK.

More or less what Moonfire has already suggested

Just a theory, nothing else to suggest. Perhaps someone can come up with a better idea.

At least it seems that the electronic module in the panel is not the culprit. They are not cheap to replace when they fail!

Ok folks, think we have solved this issue. We removed what i believe to be an oil pressure relief valve and gave it a bit of a clean, put in back in and hey presto it worked. But just to be sure i am going to replace the valve and have the oil pressure tested. So fingers crossed thats it sorted. Thanks for all your help.

The oil pressure relief valve is parts #12-15 in the diagram below.

Sticking open? Allowing the pump to drain when shut down ? Heaven knows why slackening the oil filter should have the effect it did!

Fingers crossed it's sorted.

Low oil pressure alarm on 2003T - solved.

thanks for your posts guys! I had the same problem just now - low oil pressure alarm - after replacing the oil cooler on my 2003T. Fortunately I found this thread. Loosening the oil filter, cleaning the release valve, and changing the oil solved the problem.
