Shotley in Essex? Now let me see, which side of the River Stour is it? Or have you confused it with Titchmarsh?
Last time I looked Suffolk and Essex were both in the same country, with no plans for a referendum on secession by either county, although I've long cherished the thought of a wide ditch from Battlesbridge to the Wash.....
Seems your nomadic ways are resulting in some lost bearings.

I think May that Woolverstone is your bet bet.
Easy access 24 hours to sheltered waters or a quick run to the backwater... The deben is tidally restricted..
Woolverstone has three eateries within a walk... The butt, the Rhyc, and the restaurant in the marina. It's a easy bus/ drive to Ipswich if you fancy something further...
For young families it's green with easy space to run around in, very peacefull and quiet.. Plus good facilities... So a excellent peacefull country setting to go for a break... You may even wish to consider joining the RHYC for the activities for the kids..
For a combination of a good holiday destination, easy access to stress free boating, and choice for dinning, it's gotta be top.
I can't see how Ipswich or foxes is any were as good for the kids... And shotley is rubbish for food.

Hi May, I would think the Tidemill is by far the best marina on the East Coast for your requirements - they are a great bunch of guys with great facilities and a short walk to the market town; shops, pubs etc - the only downside is the distance from decent sailing ground and having enough water to get over the sill but it doesnt sound as though this is an issue at present!

+1 for the Tidemill in the circs. AS LONG AS YOU DON'T DRAW TOO MUCH. We bought Murphy from there and at 5'7" draft we had to wait for a spring tide to get out. The place is ideal for young families as well as the more mature!

We draw 4' 6" and haven't had a problem though it's a bit tight on very small neaps.

Shotley is twin towned with Royston Vasey... Theres a stargate like bubble just after chelmondiston that leads to another realm and beyond that realm is Shotley.. Has a really nice beer festival annually and the convenience of passing through on foot to the ferry to go to Hoek van Holland.. Thats about it!
And ive been to Titchmarsh and i still cant work out why its there.....

Like most marinas, Titchmarsh is basically for residents. It takes me half an hour to get there, anything from a half-hour to an hour and a half to Tollesbury, and about an hour to Woolverstone, subject to traffic. That, and the wild surroundings make it an obvious choice for me, but not so obvious for my marina neighbour who drives from Wales.

When we first started sailing in the '70s it was on the Lleyn Peninsular in N Wales.
However, between '88 and '92 we used to travel between south Manchester & Plymouth (Mayflower).
Left Friday just after mid-day returned midnight'ish Sunday.
Motorway's weren't too bad in those days - 3 3/4hrs - 4 hours usually.
It was a lot easier and less stressful (with two young children) than travelling cross-country to N Wales (usually behind bloody caravans :disgust

There is a gentleman and his family that have a Southerly in Woolverstone and drive from Switzerland to sail her.
They come over for 5+ days at a time. Drive up to the tunnel, through and up to Wooly. I think it takes them 10 hours door to door.
He was bored of sailing on the lakes and loves the East coast. He picked Wooly because of the quality of the staff to look after and mind his boat when he can't be here for a week or two at a time. I think his son is at Uni in Edinburgh.

Tide mill would be a lovely spot to base a boat as a weekend retreat. Nice town, not too big, and if you do want a little trip out you can potter down the river or anchor up. Defo be my choice from your list.

I have been for a recce and it looks lovely
I must admit that I thought the boat would be a little on the large side for the Marina but the Harbourmaster assures me he can find us a suitable spot
Mr Maybh remembers helping out on an MBM Cruise where the whole fleet was fitted in:encouragement:
Just need to get her there at the end of March - having nightmares about entering the Deben already:ambivalence:
