Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Good to see Jimmy's new boat out and about - he did a flypast for us in Newtown Creek /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Cheers Rick, good to see you (briefly!) yesterday - had an uneventful (and fast) run down to Weymouth. Met up with Timbad and Fendergirl for supper - thanks for the Ming Wah recommendation, had a fab meal. Think we might stay another day down here, then back to Swanwick tomorrow.

Cheers
Jimmy

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Thanks Nick, it's got a C120 at the moment, but I want to see if I can fit a C120W in there instead (it'll be tight but it might just go), just to give it a try. How's the K34?

Cheers
Jimmy

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Hey Jimmy, nice boat. You whizzed past us approaching the Hamble on Monday PM, and then we tootled past you going up the river. We were in a Beneteau Antares 9.80. If I'd known it was you I would have said hi.

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Hi Mike, yep, I thought I knew the name Amillie from somewhere, I just couldn't place it. We got back up to the Fairline berth, to be met by Jon Mendez (no pressure when mooring then!), and he mentioned that you'd been on the cruise. How was it? We went to Weymouth for our maiden voyage - perfect boating weather.

Cheers
Jimmy

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Oooh, lovely machine Jimmy - congratulations. Looks very mint! Hope you have much fun in her. What's the story with the name (you abandoned TorT?)

anyway, when is she heading for the Med? :-)

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Thanks jfm - based on an ownership span of four days - I am absolutely loving it. Maiden voyage on Saturday was to Weymouth - easy, great fun. Can't tell you how much I am enjoying being back on a sportcruiser...

Decided that we had jinxed the ToT name with the P42 - so I picked Vega (H suggests that as I get older, I get, er, more vaguer...).

Cheers
Jimmy

That's what I like to see, Fenders jammed against the rails (man after my own heart)!

[/ QUOTE ]

We used to do this all the time on the T37; when we got the P42, we discovered that the side decks were too wide (easy to walk along, right enough) - so this time around I wanted to make sure we got back into a boat with suitably narrow side decks. For me, it's all about making it as easy as possible to just go boating - and having to untie and retie fenders every time you take the boat out isn't the optimal arrangement. So: P42 0, T40 1.

Cheers
Jimmy

Help, I can't make you out Jimmy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif You came on my boat a few weeks ago and (in a boat-geeky hour that we were both guilty of) pointed out that the curves on my factory-fitted hansgohe towel rails didn't match perfectly the curves on my retrofitted heated towel rail. Not just any towel rail either, but a Sussex one, the Rolls Royce of towel rails, welded in stainless with no bleed nipples or screws showing. Talk about Jimmy-the-Detial-geek /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. Then you go all philistiney and advocate just chucking your fenders anywhere while underway!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ah, but I don't just chuck them anywhere - they have to be wedged behind the rail stanchion which is immediately astern of the point where the fender is tied on to the rail, with the tied end of the fender facing forward... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Close observers may notice that the crew have failed to adhere to these principles in complete detail (but in their defence, this was our very first trip out on the boat).

Anyway - your boat is so lovely, and well thought out, that I had to try really, really hard to find something to have a debate about! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Btw, did you satisfactorily resolve that trim detail we discussed on the panel behind the door in the stbd cabin?

Cheers
Jimmy

OMG, H has seriously under-diagnosed your condition Jimmy. If you were merely "a bit vaguer" it would be a good thing, compared with, er, going totally OCD /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes that trim detail was done very cleverly by 2 guys who flew down to fix it from the Fairline factory. Not quite the way you proposed doing it, but a really nifty fix and I'm v happy with the result. I'll get a pic sometime

[/ QUOTE ]Careful with fender always tied in a specific point, it won't be good for your gelcoat in the long run. Congratulations anyway, really beautiful boat.

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

More questions! The flap in the stair riser, transom stbd side - is there a passerelle in there? What tender is in the garage?

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

All T40's have that flap; if there's a passerelle, that's where it goes. If not (like mine) then it is just a long thin locker. Standard tender is a Valiant D270. The Valiant is not a great tender (it's too narrow, really) but the garage was designed for it. I would love to get a Walker Bay 270 in there but RogerRat has done lots of experimentation with tenders and has eventually concluded that the only sensible choice is the standard model; anything else needs to be partially or even completely deflated before it'll go in.

Cheers
Jimmy

Strange ain't it how you can two boats one after the other, both great choices but one just suits you both better. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I know quite a few on here would have preferred the P42 but I know exactly where your coming from with your initial reactions to the T40. They take a lot of beating. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

With regards to the tender, I totally agree with the Valiant 270 being a bit small, you'll need to be careful about trim to stay dry at times. The W.Bay270 is far superior in every way except that I needed to totally deflate it to get the folding transom to work and thereby allow the Merc 10Hp to get into the garage.

I can launch the Valiant in just a couple of minutes and with a Yam 8Hp mounted, it pushes it along very nicely at close to 20 knots. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Looking forward to seeing you out there Jimmy, mine will be the one with the fenders stowed! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

Crikey, that would be even worse, the whole idea of the folding transom was to keep the engine on. The WB is just too big and would still need partial deflation. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Re: Lookout - there\'s a Vega about!

That's a shame. Guess I'll have to live with the Valiant ... for now!

Cheers
Jimmy
