Just bought a boat via a Brokerage in Dartmouth, Devon (pending survey) and due to time restraints I'm looking in to options for the delivery to Gosport Marina, Eastern Solent.

I have received quotes from transport companies for around £900 to deliver by road but the broker has advised me that I should be able to get the job done a fair bit cheaper by hiring a professional skipper to bring it back by sea.

Any recommendations would be gratefully received. He or she would have to be insured and qualified for this type of work. The boat is a 27ft Jeanneau Leader with single Kad43 (Out drive).

Cheers

Paul

I do know a chap who does that trip regularly and who is an experienced professional skipper. He is based on the Dart and delivers boats to and from the Solent (and many other places) all the time. If you would like his details, drop me a PM.

To be honest, if I wasn't going to do it myself then the easiest option is probably by road, and not much more expensive if at all. It's going to cost you at least £250 in diesel plus I'm guessing two days worth of delivery skipper rates plus their expenses. And by road yo know it's going to arrive at a given date with no weather windows to worry about.

Now if you are doing it for the journey and not just a means to get it to the Solent then forget the above.

2 day?? It's a delivery trip not a holiday

With road trip you also have lift cost twice. A run like that would be far better by sea.

Quite, train one evening, kip on boat, early start, check tide and weather windows its a 6hr run, most likely in a SW prevailing wind in which case its from behind, easy peasey.

Skipper back home in 24hrs.

Would be interested just out of curiosity how much a delivery skipper would charge. They certainly won't charge just for the time on the boat. I imagine it'll be from when they leave home till they return. 2 working days worth of time I recon.
I agree best option by sea if you are doing it yourself.

That is a day trip, hire car to dartmouth leaving early and then run the boat back to the solent. As for the train, well from southampton its about 4 1/2 hours with a few changes so more cost effective to hire car or even a airport cab for about £130.

Brixham to Hamble 5 hrs @ 18 knts with the right tide.

Did the trip with colhel, when we come back will ask him again or anyone else that fancies the trip.

Depending on your confidence do the trip yourself, a great way to get to know your boat. A delivery skipper will only do the trip if the conditions suit especially with only 1 engine.

Either way hope you get to your home port for the summer
