I'm rebuilding a 16ft 6" launch and I'd really like it to have some kind of loo facility.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a small foredeck then a thwart with a hole with an infill piece , with space under for bucket and chuck it.

In terms of privacy, a canvas spray hood, just like any other, but with a zip or Velcro rear bulkhead/wall/flap arrangement.

Is this just too ridiculous?

Comments or suggestions welcome. Toilet humour very welcome.

I got from a camping shop a folding stool with a loo seat on it and provision for attaching plastic bag. The seat it self sits on tubes across the gap in the forepeak between the bunks. It is easily stowed away. I keep a suitable sized bucket that just fits under the seat which has a tightly fitting lid. (the kind of bucket that comes with plaster or paint about 20l I think. ) the plan is just to use it in emergencies. Seldom used you can just chuck it or save it until a suitable disposal is available.
Yes you can do something similar with a carved wood seat. Privacy is not a concern if other crew are in the cockpit just fit the wash boards. ol'will

It's an open launch :)

I don't know what boat the OP has, but I'm picturing something like this:

Presumably the seat and tent arrangement is with ladies in mind? It seems a bit overbuilt, but I can't really come up with an alternative apart from just accepting that 16' open boats don't have loos. I do know some who might prefer to hold it in rather than have to erect an obvious "toilet tent" and sit inside it while everyone else knows exactly what they're up to; then again, my step-granny would have just hung her bum out over the rail and got on with it, so it depends who the intended users are :)

For blokes, discretely turning away and filling a bailer that's then emptied straight over the side is probably more in proportion.

Honestly!
In a boat that size you simply don't have room for indulgences like that. As there's no privacy anyway why waste the space?
The only practical way on a boat that size is bucket and chuckit. You'll soon appreciate that a very valuable 10% of your boat's length isn't devoted solely to your bowels...
If the water is warm; skinnydumps. Else just stick your arse over the transom and....

Heavens! It isn't that difficult is it?

I think you really are stuck with ' hold on or use a bucket ' - if the boat had a cuddy you could fit a porta potti ( they vary in size re headroom and most marinas have disposal points now ).

You are in good company, the round the world racing maxi boat ' Flyer ' had a simple loo seat on the pushpit; don't think it would attract many girlies on a first date though.

CVR used to live not far from us and Flyer was in the local marina. Don't remember the 'aft seat', but I expect it was dismounted in port ;o).

Holding on might not be an option if something dodgey has been eaten..

Thanks for all the replies.

Yes, its an open launch, it was a Fairey Falcon, but now in the process of becoming an open launch.

It'll have the thwart and the spray hood anyway, so its only really adding a couple of holes in plywood to retain a bucket.

Its just a small effort to make it more useable for family.

I'm up against the same problem with my Longboat - although it's substantially longer than your launch, a lot is taken up with the bow and stern decks so the cockpit is probably similar in size. I've got as far as acquiring a very small chemical toilet from Lidl which should be able to live in the stern locker, but privacy is definitely the issue. I've got about as far as thinking of a camping style toilet tent (3' square-ish) hoisted up the mast.

I did wonder about that, but the opportunity for a Frank Spencer moment seemed too great.

Portapotti for ease of installation (face forward) and use a Poncho for "privacy."
We did this with 3 mates and my daughter for Trafalgar 200... a long day on a RIB.

How long are you planning to be at sea for? More than a day?
I'd us a small bucket for wee, with everyone discreetly turned round, and advise everyone about the limited toilet facilities and suggest they go before you go. Just trying to keep the toilet paper dry can be a challenge

When I used to sail an Enterprise dinghy (13' 3" LOA) the 'loo' was the bailer or, sometimes, the open-top centreboard case. That was some fifty-five years ago, when people were not as 'liberal' as today.

Also reminded of the those 'ponchos'that were used on beaches to change to swimware a few years ago.

Around here, less concern. While I was launching, a girl shucked off of her kit to change from bikini to street. Nobody blinked or even looked..
