Longest wasted trip you've had to make....

spent a very pleasurable few hours on saturday morning cruising up the river Ouse up through York in my Birchwood TS37 supersport. Had a lovely time waving to all the people walking along the foot path and dodging canoeists:rolleyes:
Anyway got back to the marina and moored up which was a big moment for me has the marina have put me in one of the worst berths possible for a 39 ft boat to get into (I think it's punishment for not buying a very dodgy boat from them!!)

Anyway after much high fiving with my 13 year old son (chief engineer, second mate and chief tea maker) for the excellent time we'd just had we set of back home to Scarborough to tell SWMBO all about our days adventures.
Once we arrived home we spent a few hours telling our tales of adventure, however it wasn't until 6pm that evening we realized that in our excitement and general back slapping that we'd left the entire flybridge canopy off and hatch open!
This resulted in a very quick dash back to York in busy traffic (bloody tourists), about a two hour trip to go back to the boat to secure her due to the very bad weather that was due the following day.

I only wasted two hours in this TOG moment, can anybody beat that!!

Every trip to see any boat described in the special language known only to brokers,estate agents and polititions and only vaguely connected to English and the truth. :)

Ten years ago travelled from North Bucks to view a £100,000 boat in Bembridge I.O.W.
Advertised as first class by the broker, even spent an hour on the phone with him, however I think he must have been registered as a blind person !
I spent no more than ten minutes on the vessel , couldn't berate the broker to much as needed lift back to the Cowes ferry terminal.
However never trusted an advertiser since !!!

C,mon brokers...where are you ...why are you letting people travel hundreds of miles to look at tired old rubbish that has been on your books probably since Noah was a boy....knowing full well the only way you will get rid of it before the second coming,is by halving the price.
Perhaps you do not the cojones to tell the seller it a pile of poo ??? :)

Once went from Poole to Weymouth by boat , as I approached Weymouth realised I'd left my wallet in the car back in Poole No other means of support so had to turn round and go back. Only wasted about 4 hours and 60 litres of diesel.

Keep some spare where with all on boat now, So I can at least get a train or bus back!
 
Had a phone call from my dad this morning - he'd driven down to the boat to collect the plate that mounts on the gearbox to hold the end of the morse cable. Only to find that it wasn't there. Because it's in my shed.

We'd agreed on Saturday that a new one was needed, to change the angle of the cable so it doesn't chafe on the fuel tank. What we seemingly hadn't agreed was which of us was going to do the work!

Perhaps not exactly wasted.......but I once went down to the boat after a 2 hour drive, only to drop my car keys (no key but the usual 'fob' including alarm, immobiliser) into the marina I boarded.
No probs really as we still had the boat keys, and ample 'supplies' aboard....but unfortunately the 'spare' car keys were a 4 hour round trip away..........and the car was locked��
 
Drove from Sheffield to Lincoln one Friday evening after work only to discover we had left the boat keys at home and our friends boat with our spare keys on it gone from its mooring.

Had to drive the 50 miles back home to pick up our set and then drive back again.
 
I was asked to be a keynote speaker and seminars host at a week long company conference at The Nassauer Hof Hotel in Wiesbaden.

I arrived on the Sunday evening to be told that that due to a 'crisis' back at the company's production plant, the event had suddenly been cancelled, but I was free to avail myself of the facilities until my flight on Friday.

Now that's what I call a wasted trip - a 5* suite, Michelin stared restaurants, thermal spas and when the valet packed your bags at the end of your stay, they included your complementary dressing gown, towels, shoe bags, suit covers etc so you'd remember your stay.

As if I would ever forget.
 
Saw a boat advertised in Fowey, read the ad, looked at the pictures, rang the broker, had him describe it to me and send me a copy of a recent survey, which was pretty damning. The broker assured me that this was all ancient history and all the remedial work had been done.

So, I made a journey from London down to Cornwall to look at the boat, to discover that none of the work had been done, the motors hadn't been run for years, the deck was completely banjaxed, and the hull so rotten that I could stick a finger through it where it met the transom.

A total time-waste.

You of got the broker to pay for your fuel to get down there, that's just blatant lying :mad-new:

I didn't, as I had flown myself down to Truro airfield and then been picked up by the broker, so I couldn't be too rude to him as I needed a lift back to the airfield. I had enjoyed the flight and visited a new airfield, so the day wasn't a total write-off. If I'd driven, I'd have been very animated indeed.

Whilst I was tempted to sound off at the broker, he had (allegedly) been told by his client that all the work had been done, when in fact it hadn't.

However, the boat is still advertised with the same description, so I now think that the broker was just trying to wriggle sideways.
 
Umm...once we packed the car in Oxford and set off for a cottage we'd rented on the Lizard. When we arrived, it became clear that one case containing vital stuff had been overlooked. Still, one 500 mile round trip by yours truly resolved the issue. :D
 
Not so much a wasted night but a very uncomfortable one. I had gone to a function, left the car at the Marina and had quite a few beers with the intention of crashing on the boat for the night (too far to get a cab home). Well at 4am upon returning in the Taxi on a cold night I realise I had left the keys to the boat at home as I had taken them all in to get spares cut that week and forgot to bring them!! It was a very uncomfortable and cold night spent in the car, oh and the hangover!!!!!!!!!
 
I drove to Holland to look at a mobo which had been listed as a one owner high quality boat.

When we arrived I told the broker that it was neglected and the boat looked like it was twice the age. He replied that the boat was a mess and the guy that owns it is an 'animal' to keep a boat in such poor condition.

In a moment of optimism about my diy boat skills, we offered half the asking price, which was fortunately laughed out of the room.

And it's still for sale.

At the same price.

And that was about 18 months ago.

But we had a nice weekend in Ghent on the way there. So not a total waste, but a lesson in asking for more 'recent' photographs before making a long trip.

Before Mobile phones became commonplace.

Friend of mine realised he'd managed to lock his car keys in the car. Spare keys were in the kitchen draw at home. Wife had gone shopping in Staines with a friend about half an hour earlier. Left note for wife to explain where he'd gone and I drove him the two hour journey from Penton Hook Marina, round the M25 and up the M11 to his home. No keys in the kitchen drawer. Spent a hour tearing the home apart but to no avail. Drove the two hours back to the marina to find his wife who had only just returned from her shopping spree had the spare keys with her all the time.
 
Booked the boat into Island Harbour for the IOW Festival, and invited some friends along. Left work in Birmingham early on the Friday and met the friends at the boat in Lymington. We'd just opened the first bottle when we realised we'd forgotten the tickets, so had a 300 mile round trip in Friday rush hour traffic to get them, and missed most of the acts on that night.

Seems to be quite a few pilots on here..........is it an earnings thing or a desire to spend it ASAP?
