Long shot but... is this yours?

Don't think so but i did look at it as upgrade to mine if i can sell mine!!! Looks good though. Do you wan't me to get contact details?

Well the quickest way to find out about it is of course to contact the broker whose website this is from.

And to make it easy for you that's me!

My email and number are both listed with the ad so why don't you give me a call and I'll see if I can help you.

And by the way Csail - the marina, rightly so, will not give out names and numbers

Don't know why not, all the yacht clubs list names/numbers etc.

Well one reason could be a little thing called the Data Protection Act which you may or may not have heard of and relates to data held about individuals on electronic media amongst other things and secondly, if for example I was a customer of yours, I would be less than impressed should you happily hand out my details to an unknown third party.

What yacht clubs (which in any case should ask permission from their members somehow prior to including them in any published list) may or may not do has little to do with what a business legally can or morally should do although I would think it likely that the DPA also applies to yacht clubs anyway.

Doesn't matter what anyone thinks may be right or wrong, the authorities take a dim view of breaches of the DPA and fine accordingly.

For the record, Portishead Marina don't give out names and numbers! When a fellow berth holder wanted to get in contact with me, they gave the marina office their details, and Guy gave me a call and asked me to call them. V professional!

CBYC give you the choice of being included in the year book - if you say no your not in, and yes you are. AFAIK this choice authorises your details in select a form - ie name, number and boat name to be released into printed form the year book under the DPA.

Cheers

Stu

Got to smile. On the one hand you have a broker in full flight defending his commission and talking about morality in business whilst on the other hand you have an enquirer wanting for whatever reason to bypass the brokers contact arrangements. And a club member trying to be helpful.

As far as I am aware the DP act ( a ridiculous piece of govt interference if ever there was one) does not apply to private individuals so if I had the boat owners contact details ( I dont) I would not hesitate to pass them on. BY pm to avoid general circulation. Likely as not his details are in the phone book or on the web anyway. Not to mention available to the Indian scammers who are forever phoning me.

Bosun H

Glad to hear you are smiling, it is after all the season of good will.

I assume, as I don't believe you know me, that your interpretation of my post is based on what you would have meant if you were posting it about yourself?

For the record, and as it's a slow day on here and we need something to keep on about, I was not in full flight mode but merely gently gliding and also, as was stated in my post, was offering to help if I could if the OP contacted me, not defend commission which is a pointless exercise in the main anyway.

On the other topic I agree the DPA may not be the best piece of legislation ever enacted though it does have its purposes, but in a long association with companies large and small I have never encountered one that would dream of giving out details of an individual to third parties without their consent and I believe that is a right and proper way to act, you clearly do not so we must beg to differ over that one, perhaps I'm just old fashioned.

Happy Christmas.

Happy Christmas to you too.

Yes the DPA irritates the hell out of me when I phone up a bank or whatevere and they refuse to talk to me about my wife's affairs and vice versa. Not to mention the plod who refused to give me the name of the woman who had knocked me off my motorcycle and landed me in intensive care.

I think it's only fair to point out that the original post doesn't suggest that anyone was trying to do anything underhand and I think John's polite reply equally doesn't suggest anything underhand.

So I second you Bosun lets all remember the season of good will.

Equally I think John is correct in not trying to defend his industries fees. SWMBO is an agent in the film industry and her income is almost wholly based on a percentage of her clients earnings.

I think John would see little difference between their industries. She receives a lot of flack when clients are unemployed and she is working hard to get them 'a gig' but once the excitement of employment is forgotten, and equally the worry of unemployment, many soon begrudge the commission on the work she has obtained for them.
