On clearing my boat today I discovered what looks like a long sail bag. Approx 1' wide by 12' long. What is this? Is it a snuffer for spinaker/cruising chute?

If it's made from sailbag type of material, and has a zip along one of the long sides, then it may be a bag for a laminate foresail, to avoid too much folding. 1 ft width sounds a bit small though.
12 ft is rather short for a snuffer!

Its about 15" wide, of red sail bag material, drawstring at the opening and a carry handle at midpoint. But............what is it for?........................

Could it be for a fully battened main? The battens can be a pain to take out and a long sailbag could take a lot of time out of taking a sail off.

On our last boat we had a fully battened main with a long (+/- 12 feet) sail bag (I would add it was a rather fetching Navy Blue...matched the dodgers and sprayhood!!).

When taking the main off the boat it would fit into the car once the front passenger seat had been fully reclined, the luff end of the sailbag put into the footwell and then the sail bent around until the leach end of the bag slotted over the Driver side rear seat! Easy!! (as long as you drive a larger car!)

My fully battened main came flaked and rolled traditionally. The battens came in a cardboard tube. The supplied sailbag swallows the main in about 1/3 of its length. The rest of the material simply covers the 3 longest battens! A complete waste of material and space! I am having the bag cut down to fit the sail only. Battens are always stowed seperately anyway; along the saloon floor over winter , on the deck if we are onboard, and inside an old windsurfer mast if they need moving.

Doesn't have to be just for laminate sails. Very few racing sailors fold their sails if they can avoid it - particularly on dinghies & day racing keelboats. We roll our laminate jib and dacron main, and boats like Etchells roll jib and main (both dacron).
