Anyone care to take a stab at costs for the following logistical activities.

40ft long, 12ft beam, 12 tonnes, Nice (SoF) to Le Havre.

23ft long, 9ft wide, 2 tonnes, Sydney (Oz!) to Southampton.

TIA

First one = 6k of lorry, approx. Plus cranes.

Second one - can the hull be put on a diagonal steel stand to get it in container? Depends on shape of boat. Chop off superstructure and refit on arrival maybe? A container is 10 foot 8 diagonally. A 40 foot container from Aus might be 10k (very rough gusss; ask zippy. I know a 20 foot container Florida to UK is a bit under USD3k retail) and you could sublet the unused 17 foot of the container

Is that 6k euros?

Sadly none of the options to squeeze it into a container are viable. It'll have to be deck cargo in one hopefully unharmed lump!

Don't forget (I'm sure you didn't) that the container dimensions you've given are external not internal so it's another 6 inches short on width.

For the second if this is an import into the EEA you will require to have it passed for RCD, even if it's build pre-dated RCD. This is why no one imports the myriad of cheaper trader style boats from the US.

Indeed. The prices are hard to back-engineer. There is a big impact of sharing, and of port calls rather than miles.

So for example, my current sq78 was about €28k Southampton to genoa on a normal scheduled ship with loads of other mobos on deck, by my prev sq78 went on a Russian ship that was specially diverted (by PSP) to pick up just my boat in soton and that cost €60k with me as the only deck cargo

In all cases the price is the same whether you get off the bus in Palma or Genoa or anywhere else en route

7Star offered (of their own prompting; I didn't ask them) last year to take my boat on a short hop from Genoa to Dubrovnik, so save me schlepping round Italy. They had a ship doing the route anyway, because many ships do UK - Gibraltar - Palma -Genoa - Adriatic - Turkey - etc, and towards the end of the journey they're pretty empty because so many boats get off in Palma. I thought this would be cheap but they still wanted €20k, due they said to port costs. I declined

Prices quoted are ex VAT you pay VAT for an EU delivery but not if you get off the bus in non EU eg Gibraltar.

Basically this is waaaaay more expensive than road transport, but needs must

Ben's had a beer with Henry and is buying one of these http://crestpontoonboats.com/crest/node/425:encouragement::cool:

It must have been someone else, Henry's strictly a Bennington man:

don't have firm numbers to hand but can put you in touch with a few people when I'm in the office tomorrow. I'm not good on the European trade as its not really my bag.

for the Australia one....

have a think about using a flat rack container, makes loading easier and allows for overweight / height.

Would need a 40 ft FR container and if you load it off centre so the overhang is on one side only you will be paying for 4 TEU slots rather than 2 (being a 40 ft container) don't recall seeing the height but if its higher than 2.45 meters you will need to double the lost slots as you loose the space above.

container routes back from Australia are generally via transhipment over Singapore of Malaysian ports but this shouldn't be an issue as this isn't hugely out of gauge.

i was speaking to a rep the other week about a new direct service to AUS from Europe but don't recall the reverse rotation. i can look for you tomorrow if you like? i guess transit time for return direct would be something like 48 / 52 days. indirect (via transhipment) add at least 10 days to this and maybe a bit more.

don't discount RORO options back from Australia. load the boat to a MAFI trailer and it can be towed on and off the ship. again, suspect it will be a transhipment service but not 100 % sure as RORO vessels don't like my cargoes.

With RORO you pay based on volume so might be cost effective. transit will be longer than container service.

Deck cargo back from AUS on conventional vessel will be eye watering....

give me a call tomorrow if you need anything else and i can put you in touch with some people.

on the other hand, it its anything pontoon related i can't help you as they are crimes against boating.:disgust:

@Jimmy, thanks, she's a beaut. I just fall about laughing when I see those benningtons. It's like someone took a pontoon that folks used to tie their boats up to when they went home, pimped it a bit with cream sofas out of an old Lincoln Town Car, and stuck a big yammie on the back.

I remember people using tilting trailers to ship Batboats in standardcontainers to race in South Africa in the Worlds....they were very wide at the wingtips

Never seen one of those before, and in no particular rush to see one again :)

Struggling a bit to come up with a wish list of things I'd want out of a boat that would end up with me saying "Right that'll be a Bennington then" .

Are you talking flybridge or sports cruiser? If flybridge you may have to remove some items from flybridge eg radar arch to truck it and that will add to the cost. Its a few years since I trucked a boat from/to Med but IIRC Peters and May charged me around £4000 to bring a Targa 48 from La Rague to Chichester. I also trucked a Ferretti 46 flybridge from Holland to Port Napoleon with Van der Wettering and the cost was about £6000. But these costs were from a few years back so I would expect +50% now. Worth talking to both these companies for prices

Two things to note when trucking boats. If you are prepared to wait for a return load, it will cost you less. A return load is when the truck would otherwise be returning to base empty. The trouble is that you can't be sure when a return load is available so you might have to wait. The second point is that the CMR insurance that truck companies have will probably not cover the full value of the boat (I think its calculated on a cost per weight basis) so you will have to get additional insurance (from a marine insurer)
