Hi,
I have just received this log for free and wonder if anyone knows where one can get the appropriate paddle wheel for it, it's a sum log sl.
Many thanks jack

The Sumlogs I knew didn't have a paddlewheel as such, it was a tiny propellor on a little skeg; known for broken drive cables, and I'd think rather vulnerable to hoist slings.

That was in the olden days! If you look at the pics the OP posted, you'll see the magic word "electronic".

That was in the olden days! .

Moody's were still fitting them as standard in 1984. I remember thinking how antiquated even back then. Equally though, Sadler was still fitting by default VHF sets with crystals for each (of the few) channels, even though synthesised sets had been on the market for several years by then.

To the OP: I have no idea if you could use an alternative transducer without knowing the spec. Somehow I suspect it is unlikely, but someone on here may know?

Looking at the photo I think yours is the later electronic type. Early ones were a mechanical cable drive froma propeller.
Vic's link shows what you need.
Generally I would say throw away what you have been given and buy a GPS for speed and navigation. Certainly most modern logs have a small paddle wheel transducer to electronics. But these foul so quickly and easily that they have to be kept removed and only fitted for sailing. With attendant water in rush when you remove the blanking cap. I discarded mine many years ago as it only seemed to work after a lot of effort. Who needs a log? good luck olewill
