Log without impellers

Can't recall the exact model type but back in 1999 my J44 didn't have a paddlewheel, it had a full set of hi-spec B & G electronics which included a speed sensor with a small sensor thing on the leading edge of the keel. don't know what or how it worked to be honest but I think the technology is a lot further on now

I know it’s a different sensor, but I replaced my broken (for the forth time) and obsoleted wind sensor with an ultrasonic solid state one last winter. Seems to be working fine, hopefully it’s fit and forget.

Paddlewheel ... simple and works.
Doppler ... great in shallow water but unreliable in deep as it uses the water layers to give reading
Pitot ... good but subject to the small pressure hole being blocked and needs to extend below hull induced interference. Really only good on powerboats.
Impellor .. good but prone to crud around the shaft entry to mounting causing impellor to not spin freely.
EM ... not seen many of them - maybe because Paddlewheels are more common ?
