My boat has a Lofrans Panther windlass which is working ok but I'd like to know if there's any maintenance I should be doing. I've looked on the Lofrans website and all I can find is a scan of an exploded parts diagram. Theres a small glass window on the fwd side of the windlass with a red horizontal line on it. Is this a level indicator for oil? There would appear to be no oil showing in the window. If it should be filled with oil, what type?

The "Panther - retired model" manual PDF is indeed a bit light. Would suggest you download the manual for the Cayman etc., which has service information and type of oil. There should definitely be oil in there, and it should occasionally be changed. The most important thing to service is the clutch clone though - clean up and grease (parts 3 to 5 on the diagram). Those locking hard leads to nasty shock loads on the gearbox.
