I have the above windlass and want to change the gypsy from the present 10mm to 8mm. My question is - can I simply swap the 10mm for a new 8mm, or do I also need a new stripper and clutch?

As you already know gypsies cost a small fortune - hang on to the old one - someone will want a 10mm one day - and if its not worn out you can part cover the cost of your new one.

Just out of interest - why the change?

Why change? I currently have 60 metres of (extremely rusty) 10mm chain. We anchor frequently (we are in the Med) and a big problem is that the chain piles up in the anchor locker necessitating a crew member to go below and flake. I've tried all the usual remedies but the locker is simply too small/high up so Ive decided that, as the chain needs replacing I will try the smaller size - 10mm is overkill for a 36ft boat. The jury seems to be out on the catenary argument, and 8mm is more than strong enough (I hope!) Bob
