i've fixed the Lofrans Airon winch motor now, water ingress, but had to remove the motor from the 90 deg gearbox on the boat as I cannot seem to get the inner clutch cone off the shaft from the top. I cannot see what is holding the gearbox to the boat I'm assuming there is a circling under the inner cone. It spins freely but will not lift off the shaft (item 277 on Lofrans drawing). Has anyone got this far. I'm thinking of splitting the gearbox further by removing the 5 cap head screws but I'd prefer to get the whole lot to my workshop if poss.

Thoughts anybody?

Thanks for your reply but it doesn't show how this clutch is held in place, I'm pulling my hair out on this, as a mechanical engineer I can normally reverse engineer most things but this has me stumped!?

If you go to the bottom of this page it has a down load tick for mounting and maintenance instructions. Don't know if that will help.

There is an exploded diagram in that doc towards the end

Is it the dog clutch inside the worn wheel or the come clutch on the gypsy. Have a look for circlips as Lofrans tend to use then for locating items on the main shaft.

Have a look at this thread

Nigel had a similar problem with the cone clutch on a different windlass.
