Locking Turns

Re: Talking mooring

Bugger .. thats the second time its happened this week. If I buy a bilge keeler will it happen as often?

Re: Springs/breastropes

if lines ashore are 3 times the tidal height, and appropriate to whether at top/bottom of tide, then as jimi says they will be fine - the length difference at top/bopttom is only a few percent. The longer they are the more you can tighten them. No need to havem slack really. As you say, you will have to runnem a long way crossed/aft/fwd to use all the rope, which you must.

No need for maths : just get a piece of paper, draw triangle with adjacent 3 times as long as the opposite, and note how near the hypotenuse is to being the same length as the adjacent.

Re: Springs/breastropes

Yeah. Got that (with some help from Pythagoras). So if tidal range is 11m I need 33m lines. That'll keep the chandler happy.

So if the springs have to be the same length (assume must be the case) they're not going to do much to hold the boat in to the shore so, as I said, lots of scope for sideways movement?

Re: Springs/breastropes

Well in fact that's where your fore and aft lines with weights come in, cos you actually make them shorter (but with enough slack) and bung a weight in the middle of them which helps to keep 'em in! I have wondered about lengths of bungee rope .. has anybody tried that?

Re: Springs/breastropes

Sideways which way? One spring fwd and anuvver spring t'other way, each at least 3x tidal height. Once over 3x length (tiem wiv bowlines to make long lines then the longerer lines will just not stetch as much.

But yes, unless you are (cos of a raft, or have massive boat) at least 3 (better make it 4 or 5) times tidal height distant from the shore, shd have no breast ropes running direct to shore.

However this does mean that on the inside of a raft with big tidal height, you have to watch for a ninny turning up on the outside and putting short lines to shore outside of you which will pop your fenders and then proceed to crush your boat.

That would be to get down to your boat from top of harbour wall at low water when the tide's fallen 11m?. Or do you just abseil down the mast. Now there's an advantage of a saily boat.

Re: Springs/breastropes

Just thought if you tied your boat up with bungee cord, particularly on the breast ropes that it might be an answer to being blown off without mucking about with weights. What sort of stretch do you get on bungee cord?

Re: Springs/breastropes

Whaddya mean sideways which way? If you're against a harbour wall there's only one sideways direction to go in!

And it's 4-5 times tidal range now is it - to be on the safe side? I think I'll keep to floating pontoons. This stuff's starting to hurt my head and my wallet.

Useful starting point

How far does the elastic in your underpants stretch? Slip a hand down your trousers to test it.

Re: Useful starting point

Come on I was being serious, I use bungee to keep the slack out my topping lift, I use it as a down haul on one of my spinnie pole's whats wrong with using it to keep you at the side in a tidal mooring? Its obviously safe and strong enough or the world and his dog would'nt be risking their lifes with it? There's a bungee at the top of the Hamble to pull the raft back to the pontoon on the way to the Jolly Sailor .. I think itss a good idea .. why not?

Re: Useful starting point

Omigod. Jimi's being serious.

[wipes smile off face]

OK. How about?

(i) Cost. Must be waaaay more expensive than equivalent polyester/nylon
(ii) Gauging length needed to allow optimum stretch
(iii) Practicality. Once you've tied a knot in it, even a bowline or a rt2hh, and it's taken a lot of weight, bet it's a bugger to undo and re-use

Is enuff? Good idea tho' [titter]
