Mike Lucas Yachting advertise a "washboard-RORC latch- locks inside and out, £35 for all boats". It sounds to me like any house door lock which can be locked/ unlocked from either side.

What a fasinating thread, compleetly confused by some replies, clearly a picture is worth a thousand words to make up for my lack of imagination. Anyway this started me thinking about an artical I read years ago about people sailing in difficult conditions with the top washboard out and no way of securing the lower board. When you get knocked down the lower board falls out and is lost. I only sail a trailer sailer, don't do the heroic off-shore stuff so haven't a clue what the rules say but it seems common sence to secure all the wash boards on every boat.

er, on a modern boat, the slot means that if the top is secured - they are all secured.

the bolt from both sides must be like a sort of bogroom doorlock with a lever on the inside but instead of a screwdriver slot on the outside it has a lever as well.

The advantage of the string or webbing solution is that it secures whatever is in the slots, rather that locking a particular board in place. If you lose one accidentally, you don't lose the locking mechanism and the string will still hold in the other two if you're quick enough to get it in place.

We too have a Hatch Latch, and it is a superb product. Very solid and secure, it is also very easy to use, much better than the fiddly little locks that come as standard on many boats. Obviously the actual device itself cannot be locked from the inside (as you need to lock the padlock), however there is a 'wheel' on the inside that is used to close the hasp. We have bolts on the inside of the hatch to lock the boards in place if we want.

Ours must be nearly 5 years old now, and is still in perfect condition, still using the original (extra large) padlock (which puts many people off just by looking at it!) This was fitted for the ARC by the previous owner, and I think he was going to have one put on his new boat, he thinks they are so great! I am certainly very happy with it.

Cheers,

Paul
