Speed boat???
6 persons on board!
Wheel house (as in 3 persons were trapped in the wheel house)
Does not sound like a speed boat, more like a MoBo.
What were they doing out and about at 01:40hrs?
Did the rocks "jump out in front of them".
'Fraid it looks like a case of another "Darwin" award
Wonder what the official report will say - can't trust the sensation seeking press these days.
Any loss of life is tragic but some folk do bring it on themselves through their own irresponsible actions then the survivors try to blame others.

Blimey.
There aren't really any "surpsrise" rocks 300 yards from shore are there, but the whole loch entrance shore is rocky.
It must have been going at a whoore of a speed to kill and trap people.
It is possible to mix up the two beacons, apart from the obvious difference in colour, because of the dog-leg in the entrance. If you left the first, port-hand, mark to starboard you'd get this tragic result. I'm sure it has happened a few times in the past, but probably no more than embarassing for those involved.
Sounds terrible.
It was a jeanneau 7.5m speedboat with a small cabin which possibly slept a couple. The boat arrived in Tarbert about 18:00hrs with 3 persons aboard.
It didn't look much more than a large day fishing/powerboat, maybe others with more knowledge of 7.5m Jeanneau powerboats will know model better. Thea reason I know this is that we were tied up close enough to hear Harbour master ask length when they were making payment.
Story I heard - next morning (Islept through the helicopters hovering directly above, I kid you not) is that they left at 03:00 sunday morning and once through the entrance hit rocks (actually the shore just at the Cal-Mac slip).
A large crane could be seen at 10:00 this morning and then remains were taken away by low-loader at 11:00.
I suspect, but cannot confirm is that htey mistook the beacons at speed and went over the area of Tarbert Sailing Club and landed on the beach.
It turns out that my neighbour, who hails from Dunoon, knows most of the people involved. Apparently the boat belonged to the Commodore (or ex) of a local sailing club, and he had only had this boat for a couple of weeks.
Very strange.
I was shocked to find out that I know two of the casualties. I sailed a few times with one lad and would consider him a good friend and an excellent sailor (raggie). We finished well in my sailing club regatta a few years ago on his 707.
Everyone I have spoken to in Dunnon are really shocked, some very popular local people have been lost. I am sure it will emerge what went wrong but my thoughts are with the children right now.
Given the evident standing of the people involved it would seem chirlish and premature to jump to judgement. Any number of possible circumstances may be responsible.
The one thing that is certain is that one can never be too careful on the water.
Yet another terrible tragedy that will leave unhealable scars. Very, very sad.
