Location of gas solenoid shut off

Re: If that\'s true...

Its true: Boat safety scheme 7.2.11 states "Vessels manufactured prior to 3 January 2000 and having a cylinder locker drain as near as practicable to the bottom of the cylinder locker are not required to comply with that part of Standard 7.2(ii) which requires the drain to be provided from the lowest point of the cylinder locker."

The BS spec does not allow the drain from anywhere except the bottom of the locker.

If I put the drain at the bottom of the locker, it fills up with sea water from the standing wave. My drain is about 4" up and I filled the void, below the drain, round the bottles so there is nowhere for the gas to go but out, but this is still not to the BS spec!

The calor marine site states "If your boat is used by you, for your own private and personal pleasure then your gas installation should be in line with BS5482:3 for vessels with older gas systems or ISO 10239 for new installations. There is no legal requirement for you to use a properly trained & qualified and CORGI person, however your gas installation it must done in accordance with these codes. A CORGI registered person should be used to gain a gas safety certificate to show your insurance company that your gas installation meets these requirements. As a note of interest, on your insurance proposal form you will be asked about your gas installation. If your installation does not meet these standards then at best sections of your policy may be suspended, at worst you will be uninsured."

I would have thought I can fit it wherever I please -

It's begining to look that that is the case. If the rules are silent on this question then you are probably right.

I have a solenoid valve for my boat, it came with the boat but has never been fitted. I must get round to fitting it some day. Mine will go in the locker. It will be easier to fit there than anywhere else! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just installed mine in the gas locker - it is a spark safe device switched from the gas alarm box.

It is a default n/o contact so no power = gas valve off
alarm tripped = gas off
switched off = gas off -

or turn off at the bottle. There is also a valve next to the cooker, there is also a valve after the solenoid.

The locker is vented overboard, if it did go bang in the locker it'd blow the lid off the box not the top off the boat! Makes no sense to put it anywhere else..

All the installations I've seen are in the locker..

cheers

Ian

Thanks Ian - sounds just like mine (Pilot ?).

That was pretty much what was intended - until gas man decided the solenoid had to be in a separate sealed box in the gas locker - at which point we encountered space issues...

Best wishes
James

Find a sensible gas man?? If not a small box must be the way - lots of sealant and stuff just to make him happy - bit of a jobsworth, sucking through the teeth?

cheers

Just print off a copy of the appropriate bit from the BSS site. Wave it under his nose and gently ask him to reconsider. These guys work by the book but never bother to read it. He should change his mind when you point out to him what he should already know!
