Unfortunately it also makes Great Britain a soft touch.

OK so tcm has had a late night rant, which some of us find amusing and others find offensive, but his point is valid. Looking after our fellow man and boat owner is one thing, but for them to scrounge for public funds to fix up a boat is quite another.

Religious faith is irrelevant.

As uncle Albert said all life is a game I agree with that also ,just dont feel happy paying for someone elses toys.

I agree with you. I have been subject to the wrath of the authorities, due to the misbehaviour of some liveaboads, I also liveaboard, but my boat is not a floating eyesore, I work for a living pay what ever taxes are apropriate, not in UK now. Parasites will drag us all down to their level and then we are branded wiith the same iron. If you cant afford to live on the land, dont come and pollute my seas!

Can't see what all the fuss is about tcm, if bleedin immigrants can get a free house and free money and free everything else, why shouldn't we try to get a little back from all the bloody tax we've paid over the years.
 
I'm astonished at the vitriol being poured out on this thread. In straightforward terms, I'd be surprised if someone gets a home improvement grant for a boat. Like someone else said - it's a tightly rationed system with very limited resources, even if a boat was considered eligible.

But you people know practically nothing about the guy who made the original request. Maybe he (like all of you of course) has paid massive taxes all his life. And maybe he doesn't have kids, and he rarely gets ill, so has made very little claim on the tax system either. You have jumped to all sorts of conclusions about his life and philosophy on the basis of a simple question, and it's not a pretty sight.

In this country, I'm glad to say we do make efforts to address poverty. One way is grants. That's part of living in a society, and applying to access those systems is not parasitical or scrounging. The UK approach, and it's implementation, may not be perfect, but it's a lot better than some of the alternatives.

I wouldn't be surprised if the bloke never comes back. Some of this thread is enough to make me never come back.
 
Improvement grants are intended to be used to improve the housing stock of the country and, unless things have changed in recent years, they are not means tested. In other words they are not being used to address the problems of poverty but to improve housing.

In this case the guy is applying for a grant for a boat and he has already indicted elsewhere that he is intending to sail off to Oz.

You may think that it is OK for him to be given a grant. Others may think that it is laughable.
 
Abigail I can understand your distaste for a new forum user getting flamed so much but disagree with you when you say people are making assumptions based on a few sentences.

The guy has clearly stated he wants to try and get public money to help refit his boat.

Myself and obviously others feel strongly that he shouldnt be able to.Do you think we shouldnt be able to express our opinions for fear of causing offence?

Probably all academic anyway,at least I hope so.
 
oh now i feel really bad. The poor poor chap possibly might not be successful with his grant for fixing up his boat. What a total ratbag I am.

However, i imagine that abigail will come back. I do hope so. I imagine this partly cos erm his/her associated website sells saily things and the free publicity with every post is quite good, innit?

Finally of course, paying massive taxes doesn't really mean that it's fair enough to make a totally spurious claim to get some of it back. Cos that's like setting your own tax rate. I agree with the unspoken sentiment that tax rates are too high, but your actual suggestion is not tenable.
 
hm, it's a possibility though it must be guesswork, really.

I'm trying to think of a less valid claim for a grant but erm, he would be fairly far back in the queue, really. He's going to DIY so not much local employment generated. Then he's going to leave so er er...

Can anyone else remember that incident a couple of years or so ago when a childs torso was found in the Thames? The police traced its origins to Kenya where a particular local religion (now obviously imported to the UK) decried that child sacrifice was the in thing. Would PC b****hit disallow hatred of people of this religion?

In return for a load of paperwork and prying into his personal and domestic affairs,he will get not much dosh and there will be conditions-the building regulations will apply HA HA so if you see a 42ft 1914 gaff ketch with double glazed pvc portholes, tarpaper and asphalt deck and reduced headroom 'cos of the 150mm insulation now required,wc extractor fan and bitumen damp proof course around the hull,well you know he got his nanny state help...One can only wish.

Well he'd only pay massive taxes if he made pots of doughnuts darling, in which case he could afford to wallet up his own ticket to Oz, know what we're saying?
