was told by a fisherman friend, razor blades would not last 5 mins in salt water so must be a load of buncombe

I havent waded through all the posts of this recurring theme but as an ex crab fisherman working from Salcombe and Dartmouth in the seventies let me put a few points from those who earn their living at sea.
The razor blades are true, we used to put them and fishhooks into the lay of the top few fathoms of ends when working inshore if a known thief was working (another commercial fisherman).
A decent pot with backline, swivel, leg etc can cost over £100. No-one willingly risks loosing that when you can have sixty in a string.
Crabs like areas with strong tidal flow, even a 40 inch buff will sometimes drag a fleet of pots along the seabed so sometimes you have to use small marker buoys.
Good fisherman go to great lengths to keep the gear safe. Combination of floating line at the bottom with sinking rope at the top plus intermediate floats are normal.
I could explain more why nasty fishermen inconvenience hobby yotties but I guess you guys get the general picture

Back-up for Quandry, although I guess we are in different parts of Argyll.
There is currently one commercial creeler working in the area of my mooring. His markers are orange or red bouys marked with the name of his boat.
I have no problem with motoring close or between the markers because I know the gear is set up to be vertical in the water.
The only time I ever fouled on a line was off Troon. Divers had marked a wreck with floating polyprop... far too much of it once the tide dropped.
