Humm to quote

..................... to find a solution that is cheap and practical for fishermen

humm does it suppose that its only professional fishermen who lay pots and creels then ?

understood that in some areas its a local pastime and regarded as a supplement to someones table, if so, then I suppose these practitioners are not aware of any regs ?

I think we may have this all wrong.

What we should do is catch all the rubbish in the sea and return it to a suitable re cycle point.

I do not throw plastic bottles in the sea with or without pots attached.

If we all make the effort to catch and collect as much as we can the sea will be cleaner and maybe a few idiots will stop polluting our waters.

I'm pretty sure no one on here deliberately discards plastic waste into the sea...... this is about damage to boats caused by poorly marked and poorly sited pots, like what you see or don't see 'til the last minute, typically off Harwich......

The poorly marked and poorly sited pots are normally 5 Ltr plastic bottles.
Or is there something else I am missing off Harwich. Maybe the lobster pots are connected to weapons of mass distraction.

The problem is not unique to Harwich it is world

Not sure what damage a lobster pot marker does, I have had the odd contact but no damage.

As I said , we should collect all this marine rubbish and dispose of it in an intel agent way.

Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain.

Our beef is not the plastic can, but the probably floating line tied between it and the pot it marks. Some years ago a sailor was killed trying to remove an entangled line from his rudder off Poole-St Albans when the boat came down on his head whilst he dived under it to try free the line. There used to be one evil perp in the North Head area off western approaches to Solent I called 'Black Can Man' multiple black plastic 1 gallon cans with trailing floating lines at 90 degs to the local routes to catch you like a carrier catches it's planes. I often wished for a shotgun on board to sink the bastard cans. I had rope cutters fitted on our boats back then that did sterling service many times over the years. .

When they get canught by passing boats and the lines cut they become a death trap for wildlife. Lobster goes in gets cahught and dies of starvation. he becomes bait for the next lobster and the same happens again intil the trap is full to the point no more lobsters can get in.,
