My Jeanneau 45.2 has a length overall quoted in its manufacturers literature as 14.15 metres. This length is recorded as "overall length" on the SSR certificate and is therefore the registered length. As far as I know, because I have not actually measured the boat this length includes the pulpit and its projecting seat. I have however seen a definition of length that says that the length of a British ship is defined as the greater of 96% the distance from the forepart of the stem to the aft side of the head of the stern post (I am assuming this really just means the length of the hull) or if there is no stern post 96% of the distance from the stem to the axis of the rudder. (I have now lost the link to this and would appreciate it if anyone can find it . I think it was from an MCA PDF file.)
From my perspective 96% of my current registered length would be 13.584 metres, and if I could re-register the boat at that length I could get rid of all the flares I am currently required to carry. Is this allowable?
P.S. I don't want this to be a debate about flares. I do carry a small flare pistol with both red and white flares, and If I can get rid of the hand held flares and Parachute rockets I will get an LED flare as well.
