Does anyone have access to either a printed copy, or use of the Sea-Web online registration details database?

I would like to find out whether there are currently any ships registered under the name "Crystal" or "Crystal II" as we are trying to get Part 1 registry. Failing that, it will have to be the SSR that she goes on - last I heard, you had to use uniform black letters to attach the number to the boat, which wouldn't really suit her.

So if anyone can help here, I'd be most terribly grateful!

Ta,

Easiest way is to phone up the Registry General for Shipping & Seamen in Cardiff tel 02920 747333. Tell them you are in process of registering a ship and want to check names. They'll put you through to a very helpful girl (can't remember her name) who has access to the database and can check the names for you. We did this over and over until we'd found a unique name.

Good luck!

in case you're not aware - you can't register Crystal II (or 2 or two) unless you own the registration of Crystal. hence the profusion of names like Seagull Too.

Yes - thanks to a batch of dud cards the Halifax appear to have got hold of, the debit details my ISP have are incorrect, and I haven't got a new cashcard yet. Infinite numbers of difficulties have arisen henceforth, including having the visit the damned branch every time I wish to withdraw - the pics will be back up as soon as I get hold of the new card!

And thanks for the phone number, Tome, I have discovered that the name is still free, and hence I shall forward the necessary paperwork.

Ta very much,

Yes, annoying that, because she is certainly Crystal II on her previous registration, and I've always known her as that.

However, the design is called Crystal and there is only one of her to our knowledge (at least, at the time of writing), so it would be really nice if she were called simply "Crystal" again. But then, for the superstitious...

...are you incurring bad luck by simply removing a number from her name?

"visit the damned branch every time I wish to withdraw ".

I can imagine that this is very inconvenient - especially late at night !!

It is proving to be a halfway-reasonable excuse for being a temporary pint-scrounger...

There's at least a dozon Crystal's registered for the UK including a Crystal II in France.
Crystal seems to be a popular boat name.

I think you will find that the SSR number has to be either Light on a dark background or vv..
I actually have a green one on the Stbd side and would you believe a red on the port (goes with the e;ectrical anti chafe tape on the various bits on each side)
So you may be able to devise a reasonable colour scheme?
Cheers Bob E,,

Registered in some way they may be, officially Part 1 registered they are not, peculiarly.

In fact, it seems the only "Crystal" ever registered was the one which caused our Crystal to be registered as Crystal II in the 1930s. And I think she has long since been broken up.

If you are looking at the MMARS database, you'll see all 'Crystal' listings which have a licenced radio installation. Where you see duplications, this is invariably because they are part 3 (SSR) registered where duplication is allowed.

For Part 1 registration, the name has to be unique but SSR is ignored.

To be in the MARS database the boat only has to have a radio callsign issued by the relevant authority in a country, it does not mean that the vessel is on any country's register of ships. Some countries, including NZ, do not provide callsign details of pleasure vessels to the MARS database and so those will not be found at all, even if registered ships (eg look up our callsign/MMSI/boat name - you will not find it although it has a callsign, an MMSI and is a registered ship on the main register here).
