Hi there,
is it possible to motor a sailing yacht from Liverpool to Hull thru the canal system?
I draw 1.7 metres

A while ago there was another thread about this (posted by NathanLee I think), and not sure how it went on, but I mentioned that I'd seen a report somewhere about an IP24 being motored through.

Just saw your draft... I'd be surprised if that's possible. I believe there is a site with the max drafts for all the UK waterways out there somewhere.

The 'standard' British canal allows a max beam of a little under 7 ft, around 3 ft draft and air draft around 5 ft. This map shows the options - you just have to avoid the purple ones.

You can Get from Liverpool to Hull on a wide canal, about 14ft beam.

But as has been stated your problem is draft, Your boat is way too deep for the English canals. You might also have a problem with air draft under some of the bridges and tunnels, even with the mast down (mast down is obviously essential).

Your only wet option is much further north. I think the Forth & Clyde canal has a deeper draft, or certainly the Caledonian canal has.

I have fished the Leeds Liverpool canal many times. If you find a part that is five feet deep in the middle it is pretty unusual. I'd say most of it is closer to four feet (minus the depth of occasional shopping trolleys and bicycles). Depth is irrelevant to flat bottomed barges being used for pleasure purposes because, compared to their historical working payloads, they are chuffing around practically empty.

Apart from the tons of ballast employed to keep them deep enough in the water.

I meant the days when they all sailed around looking like this.

That's sitting about a foot deeper than most of them do nowadays and I bet that will still clear the bottom in three feet of water, so there is no great incentive for BWB to maintain any more depth.
