Littlehampton

Son wants to make his first passage from Brighton to Littlehampton in first 21.7 (lifting keel) and has asked me to crew. Any experts out there to advise on Littlehampton as a place for overnight stop. I remember it has a tricky entrance and are there moorings available for the night etc. Any information would be appreciated to help me look knowledgeable in front of the crew. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

not an expert on littlehampton, but took some dingys sailing at low tide out a few nights ago.
Spring tide - 9 knots i reckon, wouldn't dare go higher than knee hight. Couldn't sail a little laser up without scraping the bottom.

Would be interested to hear guideance, I wouldnt do it unless it's peak on high tide and the bar outside is a long way out? I think..

Tee-hee. The harbour website says 'river speed limit 6.5 knots - watch your wash' then there's a picture of the pilot boat charging out, leaving enough wash to sink a frigate.

One of my favourites.

The bar is not far out and dries 0.4m with tide gauge on the end of the breakwater. HM's office is to starb'd where there are some deepwater berths (best book in advance) with immaculate facilities. The tide does run hard so enter/leave at latest within a couple of hours of HW.
Arun YC on the West bank (drying berths) is friendly while there is a choice of pubgrub and cafes in town.

Another place that has changed out of all recognition. Last (and first) time I was there you tripped over the derelict remains of County wharf as you sought out the booming heavy metal music from the pub. Either that or the harvester on the bridge. The west bank was a photogenic scene of mud, rotting piles, wrecks and boats. Reminded me of the Essex rivers of my youth.

I went there 2 weeks ago. Tried to enter too soon, keeping just to the right of centre. Grounded just before the first Stbd post. Went back out and waited for some more water, which gave me a chance to watch the local fishing boats enter. They all kept well over to the west side of the channel, keeping close the the breakwater. I did the same, with no problem, but nearer HW you need to take the tide into consideration.

There is a shoal at the end of the breakwater (see LNMs), and at this point you need to cross over to the stbd side on entering.

Nice place to stop.

If going from Brighton and looking to take the tidal stream along the coast aren't you going to arrive about LW if my memory serves me correctly. Haven't sailed along that coast for 4 years so maybe I have got it wrong.

they have to do that to get out against the tide in areasonable time. 5knots plus foul tide through the pierheads, and a commercial ship waiting for them - they cannot afford to hang about!
