Little Ship in the Caledonian

Would not even attempt taking one of those to sea.....
Yep, I did have the same impression looking at that website.
Otoh, looking at LS report, I would think that between the canal and its lakes there should be plenty of very nice cruising grounds to explore.
Not that I don't like cruising in the open sea of course, but I thought of this area as something different, for a change.
Or are the nicest areas along the Ocean coast, maybe?

Two beautiful ladies there Tom.

I told you LS was famous :)

Many years ago, I crewed on an Alaskan 49' (flybridge version) with twin 135 John Deere's, built of strip planked Mahogany and spray painted in 2 pack. A lovely boat with a beautiful motion at sea.

Plenty of great scenery on the West Coast, and 4-5 days in the canal is a great way of finishing, or starting. We usually spend two days in the canal each way when we go to the west coast, but spend most of our two weeks at sea.... some samples below..

This one is painted with Blakes spends 6 months a year in a shed and has twin lehmans with 2900hrs on them, she also has stabilisers on to stop the roll. She is in perfect condition and it was the first one I have ever been able to get on for a look see! :)

The owners were a really nice and accomodating couple. I left my boat card with them if they wanted to keep in touch with a small Banks owner :)

It's not always sunshine and light breezes.

Hired a boat from Laggan Locks in March some time ago, for 10 days. Weather was brilliant and abysmal in equal measure. The day we met the MV Lord of the Glens we had an inch of hailstones on the deck to contend with, making mooring up a bit tricky.

Choose your boat with care. When we crossed Loch Ness in a bit of a blow, SWMBO did point out that the boat was flexing somewhat. Smashing holiday though !!

Wow, veeery nice.
I either missed those threads, or I'm loosing my memory even faster than I was already aware of... :D
More than glad to organize something along the lines of a reciprocal arrangement as per AndieMac suggestion, if and when you'll be interested!

:D ...I am sure you'll have your mind intact..:D :D ... and will be all about timing and what you'd want to do.... Starting through the canal, east to west then a week plus on the west coast... or start on west coast then end going west to east through canal........ but you have to remember that she is not a young lady and have her quirks.... Send a PM and we can exchange contact details etc... Then there is the journey planning part etc... :D

I loved the great pilot-house helm position and portuguese bridge, and at that time had not seen a full width owners cabin previously, so the boat was very impressive.

No problem to pm you my email etc. of course, but I'm posting here first because your comments got me thinking.

I fully understand what you're saying re. your "not young lady" having her quirks. So does mine, obviously - not to mention that I've yet to find even the youngest lady who doesn't have any. Sometimes they actually have even more than not so young ladies...! ;)
And aside from the experience of a specific boats, also the knowledge of local cruising grounds is a big bonus, which sometimes can make the difference between a fantastic holiday and a nightmare.
So, I'm wondering if it wouldn't make more sense to arrange some joint holidays and then reciprocate it with the respective boat/cruising area, rather than just swapping the boats...

Btw, couldn't this be an idea for a specific forum section...?
Surely it's much more efficient to arrange such exchanges around the globe, rather than move our own boats across the oceans.

With apologies to LS for the O/T. Maybe the subject is worth a new thread, but in the meantime... opinions welcome!

I'm pretty sure the idea would be to crew on the other boat, as you say, the other way could end up being full of drama's.

Whoops, my understanding of your initial hint, and also on the following reply from Alf, was along the lines of just swapping the boats.
Btw, some friends of mine regularly do that with their holiday home, and so far they're happy with the results.
But I fully agree that this would be much more critical with boats.

so do I !
this seems to be a boat type that you either love or hate, very polarised opinions

I'm in for the crew exchange idea,
you know I'm happy to invite forum mates as crew on Bleu Angel

what are your plans for september ?
will LS still be around between 3 -10 september ?
