Hi
I have a Romany 21 fitted with a 19hp 3 cylinder air cooled Lister. The boat is shaft driven. I need to change the engine for something a little more powerful (Bristol Channel tides to push against!). Can anyone recommend a suitable engine (second hand) for this boat. Something water cooled - the Lister is v. loud and around 40hp would be good.
With thanks

I have a 4 cylinder Lister HR4W, 50 hp water cooled, guge great donkey. We hate each other but it seems reliable despite my moaning to the contrary.

Tickover is 500 revs and max is 2000 ish (can't tell cos the rev counter is buggered, but...)

It drive about a 2 foot prop and makes the boat, all 16 tonnes of her surge when put full ahead.

Its loud as hell, and weighs about a tonne, but it is very straightforward technology. and parts seem easy enough to source. its about 30 years old and, tough wood) will last as long again.

I suppose it could be a case of better the devil you know - mines 30 years old too and seems very reliable but always seems to be straining just to make 4 to 5 knots. it seems to get very warm, It takes up a lot of space and worst of all it's in the middle of the (open backed) wheelhouse so all the noise, heat and fumes are reflected right back at you. Are the Perkins engines any quieter?

Air cooled = hot running, and noisy. Water cooled = cool running and quiet. All that water jacket space dampens the racket.

Thanks for that. Next question (and remember I'm a complete novice when it comes to this!!!). Will the Perkins marry up with the existing prop shaft or will that have to be changed as well?
With thanks

I think it unlikely that anything would line up as the Lister from memory is tall and has quite a big flywheel. My choice would be a Ford 1600 XLD from a diesel escort or orion. Cheap as chips from a scrappy, shed loads of spares around and knowledge, some s/h marinising bits available if you look and reasonably modern design which the 4/108 certainly isn't. The 4/108 dates from the 4/107 design and is around 50 years old, some spares can be quite expensive as well. Although OK if you have one I certainly can't see the point of re-engining with one, with all the expense and work it would entail.....

No she won't get up on the plane but is apparently capable of 10 knots with a big enough engine. The speed isn't the problem - just the fact that the Lister always seems to be struggling to keep it up!

Which model is it? Most of the range come as air-cooled or water -cooled versions, with the water-cooled being a bit more powerful and much quieter. You can also fit a water-silenced exhaust which is quieter.

If you can find one, a 4-cyl Alpha gives 40hp and is water cooled and you can get it with bearers which fit the same width of engine beds, although the for and aft spacing of the bolts will be different.

Not sure what model it is. Only know that its the original engine from '71 or '73. Interested in water silenced exhaust though - any ideas where to get hold of one?
