listening to NMEA 2000?

What do I need to listen-in on what my NMEA2000 system is doing?

I know NMEA 2000 is basically CanBus and I'd like to be able to monitor what's going on the bus.

Ideally I'd like to be able to connect a "box of tricks" to the UBS port on my laptop, with supporting software that displays the strings being transmitted on the Bus

I've looked on the web and I see many CanBus monitoring systems ranging in price from a few pounds to £200 or more, many seem to be aimed at monitoring the CanBus on cars.

In the past I've have successfully listened to NMEA183 on a Laptop using a USB to serial converter and a simple program like hyperterminal.

What's the equivalent set-up for NMEA2000?

Ian,

Wouldn't this fit the bill http://www.keversoft.com/Keversoft/Packetlogger.html?

Good luck and let us know, how you get on.

Thanks for the link, I'm currently wiring 3 new i70 displays into the system (it's not the wiring it's the routing of the wires around the boat which is taking the time) so don't have time to look just now. but I've down loaded the software and I'll take a good look at it. it also requires an interface which I'll have to buy, so I'll take a good look before I part with the cash.
