List to Starboard

Hi, re-engined last year and the new VP AD31P is a bit heavier than the last V6, now with better batteries and hot water installed all this kit is sitting on the starboard side so she sits a bit to the right, so that the water line is about 1” below the deck drain – the holding tank when full sits the other side so does the job or correcting it, but then we then can’t use the loo if I leave it :-(

Is it worth correcting this by adding ballast to the left side bow or should I not be so fussy. Boat’s a Fairline holiday and I stay 99% on the Thames non tidal but do want to play in the salt water this year.

Cheers

Peter

I had a slight list to the port side after fitting a calorfier etc, but okay when using the boat i.e helm the starboard side. So basically I just position some gear down below to balanace and problem, however was not listing like yours. I would be against ballast because of the additional weight, just won't help the getting to plane.

If you are just playing on the Thames then the additional weight of applying ballast or repositioning extra gear won't be a problem. If you later decided to try a little salt water then the trim tabs will correct the problem. You might even find that the boat will level out at speed anyway.

Ah but if the boat's listing a bit to starboard when you're off it, how does it sit when you're driving. Bet your and SWMBO's weight in it, it levls out nicely. Not for one moment suggesting that your weight's a problem but have you had someone else check it when your sitting in the right position?

If that's not the answer, can you move the batteries a bit more towards the centre? At rest with no one on board you want it a bit stbd down so when your on board it's nice and level. Or have you already done that and it's still the same problem?

Wouldn't want to put ballast in. Try redistributing the weight you've already got. Bit drastic though to move the engine off centre, wouldn't suggest that one, could move the galley though.

hi, cheers for the comments and here's where the fun begins, SWMBO is size 8 and 5f 3" so no gain there. Helm also to starboard with 6 ft 14 stone captin, looks like the no loo situation is gaining more appeal :-o Not

Unfortuneatly Fairline Holiday have stuff run each side and that's it, swaping is not an option. Will have to try the trim tabs when at speed, there were fitted from new.

Could put in an extra water tank but then that's much the same as ballast, huummmm

easy Peasy, problem solved

we just swap wives. Boat'll be nice and level. Dead easy. (Please God don't let her read this).

Swap the helm over?

Think the off centre engine option's becoming favourite.

Re: easy Peasy, problem solved

wife idea, will get back to you :)

helm idea - nice idea if simple but the instrument panel is pre formed and part of the structure so would be a messy, complicated job and I'd have to move the fridge - that it, just have to put more beer in it, balanced at the outset listing at then end, just like the captin :)

My Birchwood TS33 had a genny in the starboard side Lazarette which is quite a heavy bit of kit. To compensate the nice practical people at Birchwood had placed a couple a cement bags (full) over port side stringers so that they were bearing the weight and not the hull skin. These had the advantage of setting in the correct shape not to move but were easily removeable, no lets just say removeable, if necessary.

When running, however, the boat was more influence by people than kit and the tabs were the answer to variable conditions so really, you are only talking about how the boat looks at rest.

I agree with the Thames/River, however disagree if you mean ballast and trimtabs will correct the problem. You simply don't want extra weight in the stern, it can prevent the boat planing, but if you just mean no ballast and trim tabs then yes I agree it will help - but not a good idea to rely on them.

I'm not sure about ballast in the bow, just encourages the bow into waves - not good in rough conditions!

I guess the tabs will work at 4kts, I'm still for shitfing gear around that should help. Like I said before think twice about adding weight - my policy is always to reduce weight, very important when diving and dive gear.
