Light dues (No Charge)

Re: The problem is

and the RAF

Well they have already slashed costs, where I work is living proof, and it is not a pretty picture I assure you.

But at the same time the country expects a level of excellence with our defence, you can not keep cutting and then expect the armed forces to be able to protect us from invasion etc.

But once invaded, at least you can get hospital care and your kids will get educated, that is were our funding seems to keep getting alloted to.

rant over....

Re: Light dues (SSR)

*Into Meldrew mode*

I don't believe it . . . I've just registered on the SSR

*End Meldrew mode*

. . . would never have done it if I'd known this was in the offing. Is it possible to deregister from the SSR assuming the worst happens and this goes through?

I don't usually hold with all the whinging of the wealthy that goes on on these fora re. taxes, as someone has to pay and we're not too hard done by in this country - but I feel inclined to resist this one strongly unless some account is taken of ability to pay . . . taxes at a flat rate per head are never equitable, and we've had enough of them in Scotland in recent years.

Re: Light dues (SSR)

If you think youve suffered in Scotland I'd keep quiet. South of the border we have Scottish MP's Voting for higher taxes on the English so that the Scots get more benefit. You may not get much sympathy down here.

Re: Oh dear

There are lies, damn lies and statistics . . .

The imposition of the poll tax experiment on the Scots was the trigger for the inexorable move towards devolution. There are those who see the English as a burden on the Scots . . .

Best to keep this sort of stuff off Scuttlebutt, Mart.

Yes and he must have bloody good eyesight and a very tall mast if he's relying on his buoys to get to South Brittany . and actually Webcraft you should be OK. As I understand it, it won't apply to Scotland as Trinity House is constituted under a Royal Charter granted by Henry VIII in 1514. Today the Corporation has three functions:
1) The General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, The Channel Islands and Gibraltar
2) providing aids to general navigation such as lighthouses, lighthvessels, buoys
3)radio navigation systems.

<hr width=100% size=1>.. whit way roon should it be again ..

Re: I quite agree

with you Webcraft & please do not think that I'm anti Scots. I was really attempting to point out that In recent years there has been a lot of publicity in the English media regarding the Scottish Parliament granting benefits to the elderly that the British Government are unable to give to the British. Tuition Fees is the most recent example & there are quite a few still smarting from that experience. Apparently this is all due to Scotland getting a bigger slice of the cake because the formula they use to devide up the pot is inherently flawed. I have heard that it was only meant to last for a year & successive governments have been applying it for 15years.

My comments to you were purely meant to suggest that complaining about differences in charges, taxation & otherwise, on a regional basis, would not get you any sympathy. We all need to be singing from the same hymn sheet here. The problem we all have to suffer is the attack from beaurocracy & its desire to control, plus the totally unjustified costs, with no benefit, that will result, together with the inevitable lowering of competence caused by the uneccessary licensing they will impose. How many times have I read on these fora somebody saying the "Licensing is inevitable". My response is "Only if we let it."

I see Cornishman is trying to be the voice of reason, emploring us all to stay calm & it will all go away. Unfortunately I think we have to bite back, some may say like a rabid dog, to keep these parasites away from our chosen pastime.

Re: I quite agree

Being of an older generation than most that post here I am able to refer to experience of this issue having raised its ugly head at least three times in my lifetime, and each time TH has backed down when they have realised the awesome amount of extra administration involved in collecting these dues. In each case it was a political argument that started it all in the first place.
Knowing how some people here are much irritated at the mere mention of the RYA I was avoiding saying that on the last two occasions it was that organisation which was able to bring TH to its senses. I am hoping that they can do it again. Members will be informed, I guess.

Re: I understand your

points & I know that it gets tedious going over the same thing but I don't think we can afford to be complacent.

The attacks on our pastime seem to be building & it seems to be a monthly event that some idiot, who feels aggrieved about, being cut up, on the water vents their spleen on these fora, claims that Licensing/Regulation is inevitable. We've even had Insurance Brokers chucking their fourpenn'th in in the Mag's.

Even those that criticise the RYA, surely, must admit that their stance on this is hard to fault.

The problem must be that these attacks are becoming thicker & faster. If we let our guard down then we will only have our selves to blame.
