I have used these on my spray hood but the studs are way too short for GRP. In view of the probable forces, I would like a washer under the head and sufficient length to accept a washer and a full nut on the underside of 8mm thick grp.

Does anyone know of a source of such a beast? There are available "extra length" studs but the description refers to the stud projection length not the threaded length.

In desperation, I am about to make some but the machines are a bit busy at present.

I made a plate that had tapped holes for the lift the dot and countersunk holes for fixing screws that went through the strip and the cabin side.

Wow! Nice to hear someone else goes over the top!

Doesn't the plate do the job of a nut (or is it down to inaccessibility?).

In fact it was due to the fact that I got nume from the US so came with a small unified thread and could not get nuts for them local but could bet a tap.

I am glad I did it that way as when my spray hood shrunk I could move the bar and only reposition 3 holes and not all the lift the dots.

You can get lift the dot studs that have a small plate across the bottom of the stud and two holes for countersunk self tappers. Available here https://www.profabrics.co.uk/collections/lift-the-dot-marine at £2.07 plus vat per stud.
That said, I’ve only ever used the standard single threaded stud and never had a problem with them. The only one I’ve had come out of the grp was due to it being stepped on....

As Duncan said go for the type that takes 2 countersunk self tappers. If you really want to be secure you could use long countersunk bolts with nuts on the underside.

I used the studs with 10mm M5 studs in 8mm grp 4 years ago and no signs at all of them failing. I drilled and tapped the grp to M5, a smear of araldite on the thread and screw them in. My studs were into a blind cavity so no opportunity to fit a nut to the underside.

Is there a better alternative to lift the dot fasteners? Last year we had the spray hood down & i knelt on one of the sodding spikes near the edge of the cabin top, it went in under my kneecap right to the hilt. Claret all over the deck & could barely walk for days. I have taken them all out & epoxied the holes up. I hate the things.
