Liferafts

Valise rafts have a shorter service interval than the canister ones.

Is that a coding requirement? The manufacturer‘s stated interval is the same for both options on the rafts I looked at.

Given that valise rafts are stowed in the cabin or a locker, rather than exposed on deck, if anything it seems like the canister rafts ought to be checked more often.

Don't know about valise life rafts my Viking canister is vacuum sealed inside the canister. The one think about canisters is to ensure the drain plug is removed so no standing water can accumulate inside.

I also did have a canvas cover over my canister to protect it more but some doves started to nest on top as cover created a nice flat surface to nest on.

You can pick up a new liferaft for between 550 and 700 quid. Maybe no service and buy a new one every 9 years? Similar costs assuming a 3 year service interval.
If you watch the Sailing Uma YT video mentioned early on, they tried the glue in the repair kit. Sadly it had turned to the consistency of plasticine before the 10 year point.

Since mine is in a valise and kept below, I skipped the 3 year service point I was happy to pay for the 6 yr one.

What do you use on your yacht?

Our Seago 4 man service was about £260, 18 months ago and that included the cylinder test which would have expired before the next 3 years were up. Arranged through Arthur's Chandlery in Gosport who we originally bought it from. They sent it to Seago on the van for the service and back in about 3 weeks during the winter.

The main reason we have a raft is a possible fire on board mid channel.
Yes we have been having our seago serviced for some years via Arthur’s but sadly I suspect it’s reaching the end of servicing life . It’s just a basic one in a valise hence my interest in whether next time around it’s worth upping a grade if venturing further down the French coast as in a few years we might have more units of time to fill during the summer and can travel beyond Brittany maybe.
