wonder if my existing 6 man liferaft which is in a hard casing could be repacked into a soft valise for less weight and better storage. has anyone done this ?

It is possible to do this, it must be done by a Pro and it might cost you a bit!

Better to leave it in the box as the box offers much more protection in every way. It is too easy to get abrasion in a valise - then you've got a hole.
