My three year old EV 4 man valise needs servicing this year. Local boatyard suggest that £ 180 to £ 200 is a reasonable charge for servicing a liferaft. Is this reasonable ?

Cost will depend on size of raft, container type and kit that needs replacing. I have an avon 8 person Ocean in a canister with full E kit - and this will cost abt £300 to service and replace bits (e.g. flares, water packets air cylinder and cannister sealing etc.) shop around and compare prices, but make sure you are comparing like with like.

Be careful to establish what the price of servicing includes. I do not know what is in you liferaft pack, but some people will quote for a service and that is the work involved in unpacking you liferaft, by inflating it, and repacking it. They then charge for the new CO2 cylinder, flares, water and medical kit and any other perishables, which can push the price up by about two or three hundred quid depending on the kit your liferaft has. If the £200 includes every thing, it sounds as though the survival kit in your liferaft is fairly basic, but adequate for cross channel and similar sailing, and it sounds like a good deal. If it does not include any survival kit replacements, then it is expensive and you should seek alternative quotes

Suffolk Sailing have always been very fair when servicing my liferaft - I would recomend them - even pay them a visit when they unpack/service your raft - its very interesting.

Try calling John Baker of Nationwide - 01925 245 788 or 07885 631 066 - really professional, collects / delivers, and keen pricing. Has helped many on this forum.

I also always go to Nationwide and have found John to be very fair and helpful. Whatever you do avoid Viking. I got caught big time by them last year and felt very ripped off.
