Liferaft kites

Brilliant thread, from which I now drift: my dad brought a natty Heliograph home from the war. About 6 " square, made of mirror finish polished steel, with a hole in the centre and a sighting device, ( basically a stick with a hole in it) on a short piece of string attached to the bottom corner, all in a neat canvas bag.
To me, as a kid, a source of much pleasure, but in the days of morse code, a state of the art personal communicator, probably used since ancient times.
I believe they were once standard emergency kit in ship's lifeboats, perhaps they still are?

Certainty still found in issued SERE kits for land based forces.
