Lifejackets

Interestingly, "400 metres from a smoke marker position", so smoke may help locate a casualty in bad weather and confused seas.

"His lifejacket with the light on it undoubtedly saved his life."

Seems like the light may have been more useful.

He went over at night, in enough wind to keep most of us safely tucked up at home. In sea temperatures that are about as low as they get in that area. A lot of things had to go right for him to survive. The LJ was only one of them, but the incident confirmed my requirements for a hood, crotch strap and light on my LJs.

I know someone whose personal LJ is a Crewsaver 275N with hood and light. His guest LJs are XL cheap and cheerfuls. Not sure about the ethics of that...

I have heard of an LJ with integral harness which has a sort of “fuse” arrangement for the tether attachment so that, if you go OB but tethered, it will snap at the front and spin you onto your back so you don’t drown in the bow wave, but I didn’t catch the name.

Does anyone know?

Oh yes, those Ocean Signal beacons are neat and I have them fitted to my LJs. FWIW good discounts can be had when buying several so worth pooling orders and haggling hard.

There's nothing like a vessel turning around and sailing right back to a casualty marked by an unmissable icon slap bang in the middle of the MFD.

When I saw the back tow life jacket I also considered how I could adapt mine to that type of tow.

I also have some safety harnesses and I will look at if I don them backwards will it have the same effect.
