(yawn) another lifejacket thread - but i just had to comment on the current lead story on YBW, with its banner headline 'drowned sailor not wearinig lifejacket'. It goes on to say that this incident 'calls into question whether LJ wear should be compulsory in the UK. (No, it doesn't). With reportiing like this, showing zero appreciation of the issues, there is no doubt that it will be compulsory in a very short time.
I know that the RNLI and HMG have an agenda - but why is YBW behaving in this way???
Incidentally the article also gives the full credit to the RNLI alone for the UKs low marine death rate. So no question that it might be linked to the increased personal responsibility that springs precisely from the absence of too much regulation then!

YBW

The problem is the quality of reporting and editing in the current crop of sailing mags. but then superficiality is compulsory in all the media these days.

If you read the article it states the boat was racing - and that "in the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations Handbook, it states that lifejackets and harnesses are to be worn between the hours of sunset and sunrise, the time of the ShockWave accident".

So, according to this article, it appears they were not obeying the racing rules at the time.

I am hoping to develop a second income as a member of the Lifejacket Stasi.

I understand that the rates will start at £15 for shopping a small Terrier sized dog without a life Jacket... to £500 for a Member of the house of lords.

I have given up, resistance is futile.

Superficiality sums it up in one word. Brought on by the need to deliver at low cost is my guess.

being critical makes us all sound like Victor Meldrew and ... maybe we are?

Go to go now just spotted a twix wrapper in the garden:confused:

Life jackets, seat belts, crash helmets & condoms

Oh, this is all so boring!

Lets have a real discussion - how about the wearing of seat belts in cars - that's far more relevant to most of us!

or even crash helmets on motor bikes/scooters!

Condoms? - well lets not even go there!

Was he wearing a condom?

Was she wearing wearing a crash helmet?

Was he wearing a seat belt?

Was she wearing a life jacket?

Was he wearing a parachute?

Who gives a monkeys?

I do what I choose to do! And that's my business!

Just keep taking the pills

Quite agree said my bit on when is it silly to wear a lifejacket, not going to repeat myself here as I have relaxed and laughed with the kids and this week that has been three is done!

Simple.
Cut out the article and add a note explaining it is an insult to readers' intelligence...and any more of this rubbish and you will cancel your subscription and that of the two clubs on whose comittees you sit.

Methinks YBW is just trying to stir the sea up to get the waves to crash on the shore and sell their magazines!(to mix a metaphor)

The last issue I bought, October, was so booring I left it on the train. Perhaps I am here under false pretences, as I really can't be bothered to buy them any more - perhaps I will on the rare train journeys I do.....
