Can someone please advise as to the best way to mark a plastic cover on a foam horse shoe lifebuoy with the name of the vessel.

http://www.boatnames.co.uk/index.asp

I used these folk for names for transom and lifebuoy. I told them one of the applications was for a lifebuoy and they 'curved' it to fit. They said it would be close if not exact, and I found it fitted exactly.

When I wanted initial letters for a sailing club on the transom, but couldn't remember the exact font etc, they were very happy to consult their records, so that I could order what I wanted.

Application no great problem-follow the instructions-and it worth getting the 'squeegee'.

No connection, just a satisfied customer.

Can't really say for sure which is best, but I stuck "number plate" letters on about five years ago - still there! Not too difficult as there are only four letters in my boat's name (Mojo), but on one I slipped and have a lazy J - looks nice and quirky.

That's what I used but from our local chandlery - 5 yeras now and only lost 1 letter - but of course the chandlery don't stock that size & style anymore.......... So one letter is missing but the ourline is still there.

I used stick-on letters from the local car accessory shop - they had some smaller ones (for Motorbikes, I think) that fitted a treat. Just plain black, no background, looks fine on the yellow & probably about 5 years old now. But my horseshoe lives in the aft cabin when we are not aboard (anti-theft device!) & that must help its life a lot.

Thanks for the reply, do you think that the stick on letters would stand being soaked in water if the lifebuoy fell overboard. I am concerned that if the buoy fell overboard and it was found without identity it could trigger a search.

I have used SAC Graphics ( no connection, just a satisfied customer, they advertise in the back of PBO etc but a google should find them ) several times, and am very pleased with their work.

As others have said, they can curve lettering to suit if you tell them the dimensions, and the letters stick very well, no chance of coming off in use or washing !

Importantly, they can do the lettering in retro-reflective material, which I think is ideal for lifebuoys.

Stencils

I bought these stencils. For the lifebuoys I taped the boat name down and taped masking newspaper around and then spray painted. I have used the same stencils to mark other bits of boat equipment - dinghy oars, lifejackets etc - both with felt tip and paint brush. I kind of like the industrial style effect.

I have an advantage over most - AMULET has no repeating letters, so I only had to buy one alphabet!

I didn't buy the numbers to do the SSR 'cos I'd need three sets to get enough zeros.

[Sorry for waking an old thread - but I thought there might be some interest.]
