Lifeboat speed in harbour...no respect to fellow mariners!

I suppose I have never believed the value of my own life was greater than that of others. However, that does not mean that I am immune to the desires of self survival and anyway not everyone will die out, the world will be left with all those hairdressers and accountants, or was that in Hitchhiker's?

I quite agree ... with your disagreement! Everyone should be open to constructive critisism and (in this country of free speech) everyone with a complaint should be heard. After all, we are not always aware of the affects of our actions, especially if it affecting those behind us (no f&rt jokes please!). Just as long as it doesn't end up with unnessersary rules & guidelines - I think we've got enough of those!

The guy said a 45 foot boat pulled a 3m wake. That is crap and everyone knows it.

Despite what some seem to think (but I don't think you Cliff) I have not said anything about whether lifeboats should go fast in restricted waters or not - I am sure many other forumites cannot understand English.

The point is that when someone makes a complaint making exaggerated claims, then they will not be believed by the people they complain to. Perhaps I am not exaggerating myself when I say that there is plenty of evidence on these forums that many raggies are resentful of waves, more particularly so if the wave is created by a MoBo.

Seems that you do not understand the English language. It is the point for anyone who wishes to believed.

Again, for the sake of clarity for those slow to comprehend - I have not passed any judgment on the lifeboat's behaviour. All I have said is that when one makes silly claims, in this case about wake, then one will have ones point of view dismissed by those complained to.

From me, who has been involved in incident investigations, my advice is when making a complaint make sure that one states the facts as they actually were and in a reasoned way. People can take that advice on board or not, I do not much care, but you are rather silly to have missed that point.

I think you have just hoisted yourself by your own petard and have succumbed to some of the current Mobo paranoia, some Mobo's also seem to think that they as a group are above criticism as well. I don't think it is resenment of waves by Raggies but of inconsiderate wash and certainly in The Solent there seems to be anecdotal evidence of it being on the increase.

Would seem to be fair comment reading many posts that many Raggies are resentful of MoBo wakes. But for the sake of clarity, I quite agree with you that does not mean that wakes are not a problem at all, nor mean that they are not increasing on the Solent. But I actually did not say anything about that in the first place (or if I did you may wish to do me the service of pointing out my exact words).

With any forum you will always find at least one who will "go off the deep end". I just ignore them as most sensible folk will read all the bumpf and draw their own conclusion. I have read enough of your posts to accept what you say and I think you made a valid point which will have served a purpose. Paul

You just seem to want to be contrary most of the time and seem to get in a right old mix up. [/ QUOTE ]Well John I am afraid I don't know it. As I went to great lengths to explain the simple topography of the harbour at Troon could easily magnify the wake at the harbour mouth. Again, I have seen 6'+ waves caused by a Mobo much smaller than a Trent Class life boat so I could well imagine in the confines of Troon harbour a 10' wave could easily be possible at the harbour mouth. If you choose to believe it is not possible then fair enough - that is your prerogative but to state categorically that it is not possible and call Starboard, for want of better words, a liar is not acceptable conduct.

As other posters have said that is not the issue, whether it was 6' or 10' is irrelevant. What is an issue is the unnecessary speed at which the LB was driven out of the harbour throwing up an unnecessarily large wake and causing severe anxiety / distress to a vessel entering the harbour.

Surely Cliff your not doubting SHIPS CAT's grasp of the subject of Hydroponics...!!! he stated earlier he was a proffesional on the subject and therefore my eyes must have decieved me, I guess the wash that broke over the top of the East pier was an illusion. Its always great to listen to an expert.......!!!!!!!!!!!!! especially one of the feline bretheren.
 
But Cliff, was it unnecessary speed? It has been said that the Cox knew that the lifeboat had been stood down before he left the berth, it has been said that the service was a false alarm, and it has been said that the RNLI investigation was a whitewash of closed ranks, and said that the Harbourmaster or RNLI HQ have lied. All pretty strong stuff. Not a lot of unverified proof.

I find the concept of a coxswain crashing out of a harbour knowing he had already been stood down a little strange.

A flase alarm is a genuine incident until proven to be false.

The RNLI investigation can be taken further, to the local MCA marine office for example, but not as a whinge on a public forum surely.

The harbourmaster is on leave, so it must have been someone else that spoke to Starboard on his behalf who perhaps did not have the full story, hence the conflicting story between the RNLI and the harbourmaster.

No I'm sorry, but there will have to be a little stronger evidence before I can be persuaded. It surely is time for someone to ask the Cox what happened?

Interesting to hear your comment that the harbour master was on leave, wonder what makes you say that? He certainally phoned me yesterday to query where the claim of his comments came from. I sent a copy of the email respose from Poole to him where it stated his comments.........I guess with your interest in this subject you work for ABP......great maybe then something will be done about this practice
 
Well I suggest you speak with Mr MacFarlane, not Phil Lilley, to see what exactly the harbourmaster said to the RNLI.

It is Alistair MacFarlane who is the harbourmaster, isn't it?

When you reread that, do you not see why it is difficult to take your observations (whether they are well founded or not) seriously?

Mr lilley is indeed the harbour master!!! If you cannot come up with up to date information what is the point of you making posts of an innacurate nature
 
I apologise for the error, Alistair MacFarlane is the Port Manager not the Harbourmaster. Then who did Poole talk with then I wonder?

What speed did Mr Lilley say to you the lifeboat was doing then?
