I have just taken the life raft off the cabin roof on F4C3C7F9-BBE3-4BEC-AB09-D1A40BE04B68.jpegmy new to me boat. It would have gone down with the boat if we had been sinking. It was a real struggle to get it undone.

We bought our boat last year and it had a life raft strapped to the railings on the stern and suspect that a knife would be required to release it. A bit of a false sense of security carrying a life raft if it can’t easily be launched.

Plan is to replace with a smaller one in a proper cradle, possibly with a hydrostatic release.

It would have been so easy for me to put the life raft on the flybridge railings. But you have to ask yourself, in an emergency do I really want to go up there?

We are hoping to head over to ireland in the summer.
Good plan,I would head directly for SW anywhere from Kinsale down, fab cruising with tons of destinations from Cork Harbour to Dingle Bay,only the brave come further?.Buy and study the bible,Irish Cruising Club S & W Coast Pilot. If you do reach Kilrush be sure to get in touch.

I know of a couple who were really safety conscious on their around the world trip. On arriving in Thailand they noticed the life-raft was getting close to it's service date.

Off they sent it to the local service center and it came back all stickered correctly and taped up. 2 years later, back in the UK, they were selling the boat and thought they'ed better get it seen to before the sale. At the service business they opened it and found it filled with an old tyre and some bricks packed in bubble-wrap. Makes you wonder......
