I bought a set of 4 new life jackets for the boat. They where clearly advertised as life jackets, the invoice calls them life jackets and the opperating instructions calls them life jackets. However the safety instructions states in large letters this is not a life jacket. So what are they a rather expensive fashion accessories for the boat?

So chart plotters come with the warning: Not to be used for navigation.

I guess this is something similar.

I have just bought 6 Crewsaver auto inflating life jackets and the little user manual has something similar.. It says "Not a PFD until inflated" which should be pretty obvious and logical but they probably have to say it to cover themselves against the illogical people out there..

Indeed. No chartplotter to my knowledge comes with the caveat "not to be used as a lifejacket". Not does the OP's buoyancy device state "not to be used for navigation". So buy both and be covered for both eventualities.

Strangest warning I've come across: owner's handbook for Aprilia RS250: "No part of this motorcycle is edible". On the other hand some motorcycles I've ridden have definitely been lemons.

When Apple first brought out the iPod Shuffle they included a warning not to eat it, but I think this was a deliberate joke to emphasise how small it was.

If you are in the UK, (and you don't state your location) take them back to the supplier under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 Implied Terms - Section 13.

Surely in the event you have to inflate your lifejacket you will cause a volume of CO2 to be released. Will this not be contributing to mmgw and your eventual extinction. Come to think of it, what about all that psst when you open that bottle of pop!

I get the impression that the OP is not unhappy with the items and possibly doesn't want them changed. However it's a clear contravention of the Sale of Goods Act.
Perhaps, as with champagne, lifejackets have to conform to an Appellation Controllee.

Yep very happy with them just amused me

In Australia carriage of lifejackets is required by law by individual states. The law specifies the AS standard or international standard.
So there is no question if the LJ is not made and approved to the appropriate standard it is of no use to you in complying with rules.
A manufacturer can not in any way cover himself from litigation by saying that it is not to be used as a life jacket. olewill
